somehow i have managed to miss Prince's version all these years until tonight and i gotta say i love it! i liked Martika's version but Prince's beats it easily..i think this song would have fit perfectly on Lovesexy..what ya's think?

I only wish it was in good quality.

And yes, it wouldn't sound out of place on Lovesexy, except I don't think it was recorded around that time.

What about Sonny's Version?

Back in 1995 or so when I got to see him perform 2 or 3 times a week at the Park (ah... those were the days!) he used to do this quite a bit and I always loved it! Great guitar, great vocals, really a treat to see him do this song!

Don't why I like the NPG(Sonny's version), the guitar on it is whinny, but I like Prince's guitar licks during the song, fabulous!! I wish Prince was singing this version though, not Sonny. Hope both versions of this song come out in better quality....especially since they tie in with his whole religious theme.

I have numerous live versions of it, and I have to say this song is amazing live. I find his studio version a bit dull to be honest, and the falsetto vocal doesnt sound as good as when he sings it normally.

Of course the best bit of the live recordings are the guiatr solos he plays after each verse. The best version i have is unfortunately in poor quality, it was recorded on his birthday at some point, and his vocal and guitar playing are inspired. I pray to god one day I will find a comparable good quality version of this.

I prefer the Prince version but i was very suprised to find out something about the Martika version.

I was having a conversation with Rahsaan Patterson recently (most of our convo's are about prince anyways lol) and he told me that he did the backing vocals on Martika's version ... i nearly died cos i always thought it was prince.

Prince's version is terribly overdubbed, way 2 much layers...sound more than the layers in "I Love U In Me". It took the feel of the simple beauty out of the song.

The Sonny T version was terrible....first off, y was there a rock version in the first place? It took the feeling out immensely, and 2 say the most..a guy singing this song in all is .. just a no!

Martika's is thee best version 2 me. It is simple, it is clear, and still features prince's falcetto and chorus in the background and not overly done. Her version is completely beautiful.

Now if only Prince would sing it on Musicology replacing Sometimes It Snows In April would be havens
