for you - prince's best album ?!

to me for you stands out very very special.
became a fan during the cool '88 era, saw the lovesexy show in copenhagen. then started bying the catalogue and going back and realizing that this wild wild man that created lovesexy actually started up that early producing a record like for you with fantastic music on it and very beuatiful vocals and melodies....

It's fantastic...a great first album by a guy who was 19. Also good for what it was...an r&b album when r&b was at a slow point in 1978. It was very fresh and was quite an eclectic little album for it's time.

Compared to the other albums, though, it is not his best. Very pop.

It didn't hint at what his talent would eventually develop into by any means. And it's not what most people would consider a classic. To me it just represents a kid getting his feet wet doing everything usually done by a multiple of people in the studio. I still dig the groove of "Soft and Wet," and it was the very first thing I ever heard by that young buck back in '78. But he did show he was capable of carrying the load from a creative control standpoint, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Not a terrible album, but not nearly as distinctive as what was to come, to say the least.

No offence, but you must have been 'shrooming when you wrote that. It's a decent reflection of where the man was at the time, but it's not a classic by any stretch of the imagination.

oh shut up.

the production and songwriting is more consistent and he spent a lot longer recording his first album than his second.

Prince, the album, has too much filler although, I really like it and it has some great songs like Sexy Dancer, et al.

For You is way underrated though JUST BECAUSE it's his first so people assume it MUST be worse than his next albums. It's a better album than Prince and as good as Controversy. Dirty Mind was the first album where he bettered it.

I disagree. For You has some very nice ideas and shows a lot of time and effort like you said. However, the songs on Prince are simply much catchier and better produced. Songs like I Wanna Be Your Lover are perfectly produced - tight and clean. The album is more listenable from start to finish and has a good mix of ballads, midtempo tracks and danceable numbers. For me the Prince album is better than For You and Controversy and about on a par with Dirty Mind.

The vocals on Prince are exquisite.

Check out the vocals on I'm Yours. Can't even hear them. Terrible schoolboy error regarding production.

I'm Yours is the ONE weak track on For You, while Prince has a number of weak tracks, like With You and When We're Dancing Close and Slow (boring). So I disagree that it is more listenable. Although I Wanna Be Your Lover is THE SHIT and so are a couple of other tracks, which I agree are well produced, as an album it just doesn't hold as well and doesn't have anything as good, except for IWBYL as "Just As Long As We're Together".

But that's like a poor man's IWBYL. With You features some of Prince's sweetest ever vocals. I agree When We're Dancing Close and Slow is a little boring, and suffers from vocals too low in the mix similar to I'm Yours.

Each to his own I guess. I love the Prince album, but only quite like For You. It doesn't get played often but I enjoy putting on from time to time.

I do like the percussion and bass playing on Just As Long...

I think the songs "Soft and Wet," "So Blue", and the guitar playing on "I'm Yours" alone make For You a better album than Prince.

I just can't get with the songs "When We're Dancing Close and Slow," "With You," and "It's Gonna Be Lonely". Those are snore-fests to me. I know some fans that LOVE those songs, but I think he went a very long way as far as his ballads go over the years, his first attempts were pretty pedestrian and middle of the road.

Granted, "I Wanna Be Your Lover," "Bambi," and "I Feel For You" have given him some of his finest live moments...

It's a great album. The new fan base now will never understand that album. I've never thought about what's the best album but "For You" is excellent!

Kacey725

The real problem here is that the thought of calling his debut album his best is simply DEPRESSING!!!!

It's bad enough that we sit around here and harp about how his best work was 15+years ago or whatever...

what a sh*@ty deal if his greatest work happened FIRST! HA HA!!!

Even if I thought "For You" was Prince's best work, I'd never admit it! That would be too depressing!

100% times No. For You is not his best album. It didn't even go gold or platinum. It was really a R&B-type experimental album to me.

instrumentation on "So Blue", the simplicity of "Crazy U", the strech out

in terms of maturity, i agree...but as an album, for you has better songs consistently, by and large.

Count me as another one who really likes For You

I like the Prince album too though and do like some of the songs it seems like some don't

such as When we're dancing close and slow, With you, and Its gonna be lonely.

I don't have either one now to compare the two but I admit when I was first really listening

to both of them I did like Prince somewhat better.
