Here's the thing about Prince and rap-

If you don't know it's Prince (meaning you drop all your preconceived notions about how Prince should sound) then some of the songs are actually quite good. If Snoop Dogg did "18 and Over" (which he couldn't because that would require playing an instrument) people would love it. Don't believe me? Play a Prince hip hop influenced song (not Jughead) for a person, who is not in the know about Prince but, whom enjoys hip hop. Odds are they'll dig it. Most of the people that hate Prince's use of hip hop don't like hip hop in the 1st place. And don't front and say you only like "good hip hop" and name "The Roots" etc.

I am a former Emcee from Chicago's Hip Hop Underground, this is the same community that bread artist like Common, Twista, Juice, and Kanye West. Everyone has ties with one another in some way, and the scene is growing. I think the scene is much like the punk scene, a bit to exclusive, but that's besides the point. The point is I like Hip Hop music, I respect the culture. And I still think songs like the Funky Design is garbage. Like I said there are others I like, but there one too many jugheads out there.

well pretty much all the songs where he tries to rap on are kind of awful, and if the song was good it was the rap part that made me cringe..prime example:

Love 2 the 9's
i love this song with all my heart, good flow, excellent rhythm, but when the rap part starts with tony b. and ends with p rapping, oh no, thats when i'm like..PRINCE WHY COULDN'T U JUST SING THE REST OF THIS SHIT!!!! something in the water just didn't compute on this one.....can anyone relate?
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I actually like when he tries to rap himself on his albums. The main thing I hate is when he

has these no-name rappers or Tony Mosley trying to do it. Not that its bad bad just average

which is whats bad about it. Nothing like average rap. Hate it!!
"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

I agree about that song, it's made much worse by the rap, but i've learnt to bear it. And there are of course other offenders where a rap has made the song worse. And by the way, it's Tony M, not Tony B.

However, not all of his attempts at rap have sucked...for example..."Days Of Wild"....great song! Also, "Now" - I frickin' love that song to bits.

it's not so much Prince's rapping i don't like, i even think it's better than any rapper out there.

i think he has a problem working with other rappers on his own records like Toney M.

the worst rapper stuff is on

DADADA

and

EYE ROCK, THEREFORE I AM

who are these people?

I think his rap on "Acknowledge Me" is kinda cheesy...

"and even if we're dealing with that time of the month..."

"you can come on over,bring a friend,I don't care,bear"

Alot of you will disagree with me,but I think it was better when he left the rapping to Tony M boxed

I think Prince knows that he hasn't successfully introduced hip hop into his music and I think that's why he's so criticial of it.....he only does well with rap when he uses RAPPERS...ie EVE.....I think if he respected the game, the game would respect him....there are so many in hip hop that would love to work with him but Prince as such an attitude about hip hop and yet tried sooooo hard to use it.

Yeah, I hate those, too. It's Scrappy Doo or Scrap Doodle or something. He's on Mr. Happy also. He likes to give hardcore Minneapolis rappers a break, I guess.

I actually thought that Scrap D was the best emcee he had, compared to the rest, he had a better flow and a harder delivery, and Doug E is one of the pioneers so I cant front on him at all.

The problem with P and rap is that he is thinking too hard, he is sitting down thinking, ok, im going to write a rap now, instead of just writing a song, that's like whith OutKast, they write songs, and they are influenced by him. Same thing with recent George Clinton albums, it's like he is trying too hard to be like everybody else, when everybody was influenced by him, directly or indirectly.

It's like Billy Corgan and his "poetry" book, it lacks the emotional depth that his songs have, because he is sitting down going, ok this is a poem, this is what a poem should be, but I wont get into all that.

that's my 3cents

I'm going to have to say that the worst rap on a Prince CD has got to be Joint 2 Joint. I listen to that song all the way up to that point then it's NEXT!!
SO WHAT IF WE'RE CONTROLLING ALL THE OIL, IS IT WORTH THE CHILD DYING 4?

"Don't make my daughter sound like that Prince guy!" Joseph Jackson to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis

What??!!! Joint 2 Joint is one of the tightest jams on Emancipation, period!!!! I hated his Sun, Moon, & Stars rap (that "Ja-fake-can" accent was absolutely dreadful), Jughead, 18 & Over, the shit in Love 2 The 9's ruins part of the song for me, The Flow, and Scrap D's shit on I Rock, Therefore I Am! I'm sure there are others, but my brain's on lockdown at this second.

Examples of his rap styles/songs I actually dig are Days Of Wild, Now, Violet The Organ Grinder, Pope, how Tony M was used in Willing & Able and Sexy MF, Carmen's piece in The Continental, Acknowledge Me (sorry David), Lady Cab Driver, Irresistible Bitch, Housequake, The Latest Fashion (yeah, I said it), and though a couple mentioned this as something they hated, I actually find it funny and cool...Dead On It.

yeah someone mentioned it. but you're both crazy.

obviously irony is LOST on some of you orgers.

it's Prince pulling the piss, he's creating an ironic rap song, and if you don't get it, too bad. go back to school.

All of them! lol

And I agree with mrdespues - Dead On It is NOT trying to be taken seriously (unlike later songs) rolleyes

I actually think Dead On It works, it's one of those sparse songs that takes some getting into, but the 'La, la, la, la's remind of the whimsy of Lovesexy and the b-sides from that era.

I love the instrumentation from that era, from say, Madhouse to Batman, quite hard, sparse electronic sound - like the 2nd version of Witness 4 The Prosecution.
