Power Fantastic

What were your first impressions upon hearing Prince's 'Power Fantastic'?

I didn't even buy The Hits/The B-Sides when it came out, so I disnt hear it until '96 but I was floored when I heard this masterpeice. To me he explore times, space and colors when I hear it.

This is a song that captures the spirit of the moment he was in, like small club.

Anybody know was it really true he was upstairs by himself and the rest of the band was told to play downstairs?
Was this cuz he wanted to get into the moment by himself?

peace!

as far as I know Lisa had to play the piano upstairs alone because all the other instruments were in the basement.
The song truly is impressive.

Beautiful song. I believe it's based on music written by Wendy and Lisa. Prince did the lyrics and probably arranged it. I think it was Lisa who was playing piano in another room while the rest of the band played together.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure you will. confused

"Intended for The Dream Factory, Power Fantastic is just about as eponymously titled song as there could be. At one of the first sessions in Prince's sprawling new house, separation earned a whole new meaning when Lisa Coleman found herself playing the grand piano in the upstairs living room while the rest of the band huddled in the crowded basement studio. Connected only by mics and ear phones, The Revolution still managed to pull off the exquisite song in a single take - even the jazzy intro that Prince suggested just as tape was ready to roll."

From Alan Leeds sleeve notes to The Hits/The B-Sides (1993).

...and I believe, according to Liz Jones' Slave 2 the Rhythm that this song was written for Susannah Melvoin, with whom P was having a serious relationship at the time.

Power Fantastic is probably one of the best B-sides. I don't know about the colors and the spaces and all that stuff, but I think I do remember reading in DMSR that he wanted to be alone when he recorded that track, for whatever reasons. Beautiful song though.

Smooches;)

One of LIL MAN's greatest musical achievements. A shame it stayed in the vaults for the time it did. Simply amazing!!!!

This was a favourite of mine long before I heard it on "The Hits / B Sides" and does lodge itself in the head as an all time great. Another that I love from the same sort of time is "Crucial" - man, I must have played that song to death!
