I've seen it about a million times, and actually just watched it again. There's something in the movie that has baffled me for years. In the scene where Christopher is standing outside the club drinking glass after glass of champagne, who is the lady that comes up behind him and says "when can we get together again?"? Looks like Yoko Ono's mother or something.

1. this woman could have been in an earlier scene in the film, but was a scene that was cut out for the finished product. i'm doubting it, but it is somewhat plausible.

2. what i think is that she is just one of many ladies that christopher tagged (obviously), and she is there to establish a stark contrast between:

A. all the other woman vs. the Real Deal (Mary)
B. nastiness vs. the Real Deal (Mary)
C. christopher's former super hedonistic money guzzling ways (which he now rejects) vs. christopher "giving up the business for good" / "christopher tracy, an honest man"
D. LOVE OR $?

and that sez what? that sez christopher lived for all women, but died for one!

I have always had her down as the influential Voodoo priestess that Christopher was obliged to marry against his will in order to save his parental home from being repossessed and his family evicted.

Christopher's family was poor and had fallen on hard times. As luck would have it, the malevolent local priestess had harboured an unhealthy crush on Christopher since his childhood days and now saw this as the perfect opportunity to lay claim to Christopher, body and soul. She therefore proposes an arranged marriage to her as the only solution. The fate of his family hanging perilously in the balance, Christopher is left with no choice but to reluctantly agree, like a lamb to the slaughter, to the dastardly request.

In a bid to free Christopher from a fate worse than hell, Tricky manages to breach the priestess' swampy retreat in a daring rescue attempt, during which the witch is momentarily knocked out. In the ensuing pursuit through the swampy everglades, the pair escape to freedom from the witch, who is last seen sinking into quicksand.

Before disappearing from view, the malevolent priestess is heard uttering the curse that seals Christopher's fate:

"Some day you will find the path to true love, but DEATH will be at the end of it".
