I believe it was 1993, when Jevetta Steele released her version of it.

Prince's work with Martika on her album was undertaken at the end of 1990 through to 1991.

The song was worked on for Martika's album but not included. Instead it was revamped for Jevetta Steele's album, 'Here It Is'. It did not appear on her 1991 album release, but eventually emerged on the 1993 version.

In October 15, 1991, the song, 'Open Book' was first registered for copyright purposes at the Library of Congress as being created in 1991 (written by Prince Rogers Nelson, Levi Seacer Jr and Martika Marrero).

I can't trace references to the song title under any of the writers' names (real, pseudonym or variation) through the ASCAP ACE search database.

Although left off the 'Martika's Kitchen' album, some of the lyrics (or a slight variant) in the song also appeared in 'Safe In the Arms Of Love', composed by Martika, Michael Jay and Michael Cruz (real names - Marta Marrero, Michael Jay Margules and Manuel Jaime Cruz).

This latter song features on the album, 'Martika's Kitchen' (released August 1991) and is on the ASCAP database.

Lyrics:

"You say my heart's an open book
There are pages of my life you've never seen
You're always there between the lines
But there's so much more
Just can't seem to read

Pieces of a dream
Pull us our separate ways
But we'll return someday"

On the Library of Congress Copyright database this song is registered as having been created in 1990, although only registered the following year
