I think Musicology shows one thing very clear:

It's been 5 years since his last pop album Rave. 5 years, dozens if not hundreds of songs recorded, from he could have picked anything - and this shite is what he comes up with?

Let's face it: Prince is gone gone gone and never coming back.

Hmmm...that's what I thought in the 90s, and look what my Man has done! Rave was "classic" Prince (Hot Wit U was Billy Jack B which was We Can Funk which was classic P along the lines of Lady Cab Driver, Let's Work, Get It Up and Stick). But the fact that generations keep dialing into him should say a whole lot.

Cinammon (SP?) Girl I love because it sounds like Private Joy, whose chorus was to die for but the subject matter kept it from being played much...LaToya Jackson's cover didn't help.

Prince is gone gone gone and never coming back.

LOL! How funny...I swear that's exactly what I said too ... specially after the introduction of Tony.....

So just cause he's not speaking to your era, realize that a) there were folks here going thru the same thing b4 u; b) he still speaks and touches across the generations...

Prince is a commitment...I can't believe I'm still fawning over him like I do (I'm 35 and have been in love w/him since Soft & Wet)...and I went thru that "he gone" phase too...but still admired what he was trying to. And no one will make perfect music...not even Prince. That's the law of averages and of knowing that what we love about Prince is not what the masses love. Think about it...how brilliant he is. When Doves Cry went to #1...WITH NO BASS.

Prince ain't nowhere near gone. He is doing what he will do, as always. It's up to u to figure out if that's where you are. And know that once you hear and/or see this man live, you're seeing greatness

LATOYA JACKSON RE-MADE PRIVATE JOY?
THANK GOD I NEVER HEARD IT IF IT'S TRUE!
I FEEL FAINT.

I sort of agree, but I'm a DJ on weekends, and "kids these days" like grooves and repetition. they hate the verse, chorus, verse of older songs. They could listen to 50 Cent repeat himself over and over to the same loop over and over rather than hear Prince have an intro, different verses, different choruses, and a bridge, not to mention a blistering guitar solo. They don't care! It's crazy. How many times can you hear "In Da Club" It's a loop of a loop!!

It's depressing, but I think maybe the reason "Musicology" the song, is basically a groove song and maybe why it's popular with the kids too. the other songs are terribly dated sounding, but I do love the ballads and the Al Greenish "Mr. Man."

Can't write a strong pop song? The whole album is strong pop songs. This Prince's most "pop" record since "Diamonds and Pearls." Now let's discuss your troublesome addiction to crack....

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I really think a lot of you guys are straight tripping. Prince can still make great pop songs and Musicology is proof of that. The songs are easy to sing to, the melody's are off the chain, it's a great pop album. Period.

2.) There still aren't many artists, if any, who are better at writing ballads than the Kid.

Call My Name

This is where the album is really strong imo, with its soulful ballads. They sound sweet, romantic, inspired, and well crafted.

I just think Prince sounds like a bit of a dated artist with the pop songs here, but the ballads on it are what showcase his real genius.

Agreed, for the most part. The ballads are what make the CD. And to that list of ballads I'd add What Do You Want me to Do.

I think Prince can still write good pop songs. he just hasn't on this album.

You're right...he's a dated pop artist...I still listen to him more for nostalgia than anything else...

Maybe you're right, maybe it's just on this album. I guess we'll see.

I dunno, some of the pop songs like Million Days and ICPC are great, but I get the feeling even they could've been absolutely amazing with more modern production values.

The ballads are still great though at least.

I've listened to Musicology to death and two things now have really become clear to me.

1.) Prince just can't write a strong pop song anymore.

Whether it's LOTP with its corny sounding, outdated female vocals, Musicology with its total lack of a hook, or Cinnamon Girl with its unimaginative chorus, the pop songs here really don't stand out as anything special. They have dated production that doesn't help at all either.

2.) There still aren't many artists, if any, who are better at writing ballads than the Kid.

Anyone agree? Disagree?

I completely disagree and I will tell you why. First I want to say that this post is a little along the lines of the pre Musiclology idea that claimed Prince would never be big again, but I like your argument so I am going to give this a try.

First of all (actually I am on my second point but hey whose counting?) Musicology was a very slamming track. It took me a second to get into it but now I rock it alot. CG I think given the right video treatment would be a huge crossover hit for Prince. I mean there have been more threads than one can count about the love people have for that song.

Second let me just say that too many people on this site make way too much of Life Of The Party. In God's name it is just a song people!! I personally like it. It is just the quirky little love it or hate it Prince track that imo makes Prince the bomb. I hate albums that have all #1 singles or every track is designed for the radio. Life is a track that is clearly a hit or miss track and I really believe it was meant to be that way.

Third but not least by any means. Are you really going to go on record (actually I am aware that you did not mention these next two songs in your post) as saying that Marrying Kind and If I Was The Man In Ur Life could not be huge hits? I mean those are two of the strongest Pop/R&B Funk tracks he has done for sometime and hey I love em. I don't think that I am alone in feeling that these tracks have very strong radio potential. But you see in saying that I think we miss the point of Musicology which is PRINCE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN RADIO!!!!! Also on the topic of production. This album is excellently produced.

Now the actual recording process. Ever since Prince went independent all I have heard is a bunch of fustrated studion workers mouthing off one sentence or another about how these albums (and I do mean pick one) are not recorded properly or how he needs to do this or that. I say bullshit recording after a certain point is all relative what you might like I might not.

Okay so those are my points. Oh I agree with you about the ballads by the way. I think that they are awesome. I just can't begin to tell you how many people have told me how much they like the song Musicology. If it had no hook masses would not like it believe me. I mean to each his own but I really like that song. I am done on that I won't speak of it anymore! That is until you reply to my post. In which case you will have made me out to be a liar becuase I will speak on this again.

And that leads me to my next point. Respond to this post dammit! I put alot of time and energy writing this and I am looking for a proper response. I hate giving these long answers of mine and then no one responds. Truth be told it kind of hurts my feelings and you wouldn't want to do that now would you?
lol
Peace
