DIG IF U WILL....... Hey U - i have been listening 2 the new album - depending on my mood
i've either been in2 it or not. the james brown-esque songs are my least favorites as well, the ones i likely skip. i dig all the ballads & two cutz in particular i love, one for the groove & one 4 the message - "What Do U Want Me 2 Do?" & "Dear Mr. Man" (prince in black panther mode) i'm also throwed on "The Marrying Kind". in terms of the album title itself, i don't feel like the "Musicology" term or concept is supported by the song choices, but whatever. I've resolved that Prince at this point has nothing 2 prove 2 anyone - he is the epitome of success & artistry - & he does it so effortlessly he doesn't have 2 think about it, his musical rebellion is over in the sense that he now owns himself & has taken 2 the mission of encouraging/teaching us 2 be self-sufficient. all that said - there is a time that's come & gone - the time when prince seemed 2 be out 2 prove - when he was dealing with insecurities, questions, figuring out who he was, & proclaiming 4 all of us who he was - FOR YOU was polished & brilliant, crafted in such a way as 2 let warner bros. & the world know that he could do it all with no damn help from NObody, instruments, genres, voices - all that shit. The three albums 2 follow - "the grit" period i'll call it - were some new pop - sweaty/seedy/sexual/ liberation /rebellion - pullin' out all stops - outrageous- Prince on a mission 2 make "racists, straight boys, & jesus freaks" question what they thought they knew - like he was sayin' - FUCK WHATCHYA HEARD - THIS IS THE SECOND COMIN' - ANYTHING GOES! then he gives us 1999 - new wave/funk/pop- CHARTS & MTV - establishing himself as part of pops holy trinity - (prince,madonna/michael jackson - destined 4 eventual rock&roll hall of fame status - this was prophecy. PURPLE RAIN is of course "the one that everyone got" & some will not get past - the planets were aligned - right place/right time, an instant classic. 4 me, the albums 2 follow - Around The World In A Day/Under The Cherry Moon/Sign O The Times/LoveSexy/& The Black Album were testament 2 his genius & openness - Prince as a conduit 4 the Muse - i feel this intention 2 actually create each album as an individual alternate universe, a world of it's own, or an abstract piece of art - a concept without clear boundaries - not just a vibe - not just music 4 music's sake. i'd crawl in2 those albums & never want 2 come out - not 2 mention the B sides & bootlegs of the time. i also think that Wendy & Lisa were 2 of his greatest Muses, i've never heard him speak on it but i wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't written a lot of material with them in mind, & the obvious kindred vibe when they'd write 2gether speaks 4 itself. He also wrote with his dad during this period, lovelee. & we can't 4get about The Time/The Family/ Vanity 6/ Sheila E/ & MadHouse - further extensions of his skitzo madness/genius. i can't even touch all that right now. & this is where shit gets hazy - i kicked it hard with the Batman album - & Prince's portion of Graffiti Bridge - but this i believe is where Prince is floundering & just experimenting - folks have long since decided he's lost it, Hip-Hop is the catch of the day & Prince is influenced by the change in climate, perhaps not quite sure where 2 lay his groove, remixin' shit, featuring Tony M (if i ain't got nothin' nice 2 say...) By the time the O-+> album is born (a breech baby perhaps) Prince is pickin' up his kohl eyeliner 2 scrawl the word Slave across his cheek - his Soul, now BRANDED with a WARNER BROTHERS ownership tag. (haven't we been here be4?) From that point he's fighting 4 liberation again & crankin' em out just 2 break the chains of his contract. Now as a lover of music, i dig even a little somethin' from every Prince album myself, but it's not until RAINBOW CHILDREN that i'm crawling in2 a world again - musically feeling what i last felt with LoveSexy - (i filter the absolut-ist religious overtone, & 1999 creepy voice interludes 4 my sanity & health) Many RIDICULOUSLY BRILLIANT bootlegs & instrumental NPG music club EPs later (some of ya'll might be missin' out) i arrive at MUSICOLOGY - realizing that anyone who digs Prince, has ever dug Prince, has many Dimensions of Prince 2 dig. Is it - colourful Prince whos hair on one side is swept back? Is it Prince in french cut underwear & thigh highs? Is it Hippie-Chick Prince with wired specs, & peach in place of purple pumps? Prince as Christopher Tracy in finger waves schoolin' Miss Mary bout the Wrecka Stow & bringin' her down 2 "our world"? Or is it Prince with the Afro, DO NOT GET IT TWISTED, before the conk & wave nuevo?! Yes Bo know baseball & Prince know naps ;-O Dig if U Will... But jokes aside - Yesterday is gone, & New day's 2 come - Prince ain't never "lost it" - we all "drop it" - sometime & gotta pick it back up. I anticipate the next world Prince will create 4 me 2 crawl in2 - & lay my body down 4 awhile. If Prince never takes the stage in his skivies again - it's aiight - somebody gotta keep it funky beautiful but clean 4 the babies. But i am not that one. i, SoulChilde, first chance i gets, do solemnly swear, 2 STRIP RIGHT DOWN 2 MY UNDERWEAR! peace - SoulChilde | |
