Prince, Kim Basinger, Drugs and Graffiti Bridge

I was listening to the Batman soundtrack earlier this week and I got a flashback from 1989 or 1990. It was Kim Basinger at an award show dressed in Lovesexy style clothing (with letters all down her sleaves) presenting an award . It might have been the Academy Awards. I remember she appeared to be kind of fucked up on something and was talking rather incoherently about Spike Lee's film, Do the Right Thing. I think she was complaining about the film not being nominated or something. It seems to me that Prince's film Graffiti Bridge was heavily influenced by Spike Lee's movie and in retrospect maybe some drug use. I mean it would explain a lot. ha! ha!
First, am I right on this?
Second, can anyone speculate on what actually happened with Prince and Basinger that led up to the Graffiti Bridge disaster. Were they both heavily into drugs at this time? I know she doesn't appear in the film but I heard she had something to do with the screenplay.

Is honey a drug?
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

You are correct, it was the academy awards and Kim Bassinger appeared in a asymetrical dress with letters down the sleeve, and I really thought to myself, as she said some kind of strange speech about how "Do the Right thing" was wronged in some way or snubbed, that she looked like she was about to cry, but not from her conviction, it really seemed like she was a hostage being controlled, like she was so nervous and forced in saying it, that she was about to cry.

This was the most evil of prince moods I ever remember.

The rumor is that Kim bassinger split with prince, because he was always cheating on her.

I remember the dress - it was the Oscars and it was purple (no surprise) and I believe Prince - or his personal stylist - designed it. Kim Bassinger is known for her fear of public speaking - she gets super nervous so I think for her to go up and defend Do the Right Thing was a major deal for her... maybe she took lots of Xanex to prepare... or X.... Who knows?

I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen Do The Right Thing (and I am a great admirer of Spike Lee's work, I think I will take a cyber-trip to Amazon and pick it up) - so I can't say if it was influenced by Do The Right Thing or not, but work on Graffiti Bridge started in mid-87, so I guess if it was an influence, it was only much later as Prince began to change and develop the film and ideas within.
