How tormented is he? When I am enjoying the genius of Prince's music, I often wonder just how tormented he is by being a vehicle for it. How unhappy do you think he may be at times? Sometimes I worry about him so much it makes me sad.....

Probably as tormented as you or I get sometimes. I wouldn't get too sad though. If he was that tormented I don't think he'd be touring the US at the moment. if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

He's not exactly digging fucking ditches for a living. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Walking home from work today I saw this fellow (he had to be at least 75) with no legs in a wheelchair struggling to push himself along in the driving rain.
Now that guy has a reason to be tormented. Pop stars who can pretty much do whatever they please do not.

Some of the replies to this thread seem to imply that money and fame are what should make one happy. Just turn to any history book or work of biographical literature and you can find that many, many artists were so tortured by their craft it drove them mad, into drugs and alcohol, lives of depression, and or suicide.
Being exceptionally "good" at a craft, i.e writing, musicianship, etc. is not necessarily a "gift". While I don't know if Prince is sometimes tormented by his particular gift, I think it is an interesting concept. There are new works (& a few old as well) that discuss the link between genius and madness. ...:...Must I become naked?

I have a feeling he's much less tormented than some Orgers. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

That pic of P and Mani in the back of the limo, where his head is on her lap and he is holding the Musicology cd, makes me sad everytime I see it. You can see that he is obviously worried about something. Yeah, we all know that Prince has always been cavalier about accolades and record sales, because he has always been about doing what he wanted to do. But he is human and there has to be a part of him that gets saddened that the world doesn't appreciate his genius. [This message was edited Wed May 26 4:22:30 2004 by PurpleCharm]

I used to think he was all tortured & shit but now I'm like PLEASE! His life is GREAT! He's crafted the existence he wants & give or take some strife here & there (as we all endure) he's probably very happy right about now (@ least he seems to be, hope he truly is). I hope the happiness I imagine for him is real & sustains - he deserves it.

How is he "obviously" worried? It's a single moment in time - he could have very well been smiling seconds before the shot was snapped. If he was sad about anything it's the fact that he couldn't find a way to keep that friggin flap down either! Really, you should not waste an ounce of emotion being "sad" about this pic . This is a perfect example of how we all see things differently.
It took me the longest time to actually 'see' what was in this picture. For the first dozen or so times that I saw it, it appeared to me that Prince was resting his head on a big black stuffed bear. For some reason i failed to notice Mani's face. Instead I saw the hair on either side of her face as the ears of the stuffed bear. It looked like the nose of the bear was pushed into the back of Prince's head. No disrespect meant to Mani, this is just the way the picture looked to me when I first saw it.

Oh yeah, if you squint so that you can't make out the features of her face I can see what you're talking about. Anyway, I don't see that he's obviously worried about anything from that pic. He may be, but that pic doesn't show it.

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousands word. Everyone will not see things the same way. Nothing more and nothing less.
