I understand how you would say that; I thought so too until one day I looked into his body of work as a producer. Dallas has done many sytles of music and is a multi-instrumentalist. A lot of musicians would be proud to have his resum'e,

i can't believe some of the answers i've seen on here. Were talking about musicians, NOT SINGERS, NOT MOST POPULAR ARTISTS! the topic stated:

"After prince who do you feel is the next most talented musician out there today?"

of course before Prince, there was Stevie so that negates the TRUE guy who started it all.

musicianship is a very touchy & biased opinion when coming from someone who does not know what TRUE musicianship is about. IMO, after Prince, there was one guy who wasn't that popular but that MF'r plays every instrument in the likeness & vibe of P and wasn't a half bad singer either. I said it again and i'll say it before. Chuckii Booker. If you don't know, then you need to check out his 2 albums and you'll get an idea of what i am saying here. After that, MUSICIAN WISE, it would have to be Lenny Kravitz, Lenny is POPULAR and PLAYS ALL INSTRUMENTS on his CD's.

remember the topic folks... "we are saying After prince who do you feel is the next most talented musician out there today?" not most popular, not most succesful writer, not biggest sales..

most talented musician!!!!!

not trying to start anything, just my honest opinion, that's all

Bran

A lot of people on this site are probably not musicians, so they don't value the question that was asked in this topic. That was proven by people saying Outkast. Neither Andre or Big Boi are true musicians. Messing around on a keyboard to ad to "Hey Ya" does not constitute as a musician. That said, I agree with Bran, the most well-know artist today who is a multi musician is Lenny. U have D'Angelo who plays a variety of instruments. This just being in the same type of music category as Prince. There are a lot more in different types of music.

Nothing can compare with prince - but I believe that Lauryn Hill is very very gifted and talented in many ways - and she is a musician with a big M!

cuz to me, she colors outside the lines and takes musicianship to another level. she's classically trained and she has a punk background, and she makes pop music. watching some documentaries and reading some articles about how she makes albums and collaborates with other musicians, i'm really amazed at her talent, and how understated she is about her abilities. not to mention i think that for someone who comes off as so bizarre, she's freakin' amazingly professional as an artist. for anyone who would balk at this choice, give Vespertine a good listen and tell me just anyone could create that - this is one of the most complex, intricate albums i've ever heard. a lot of that is thanks to her collaboration with matmos, but the whole thing is her, through and through. i think as she gets older and more established, she's really going to amaze us.

COSIGN 100% I love Bjork, she is absolutely brilliant and on an entirely different playing field than most artists today.

Anxiety, you hit the nail on proverbial head! nod

Talking about younger musicians? MUSICIANS, that is?

There is no one. Forget it. No one is in the same league musically.

Back in the day, Stevie WAS, but no one is NOW.

Remember, we're talking MUSICIANSHIP. NOT JUST singing, performing.

Beck is the only talent of today's music who comes close and Bjork MIGHT be up there except she doesn't play any instrument (although she can write notation so that sort of makes it okay).

Y'all seem to have forgotten, by way of the Britney-fied media, what a MUSICIAN is.

I like Outkast also but are they really that talented of musicians? Do either of them even play an instrument?

whats the point of actually playing a instrument if you can still come up with the music that people will buy and listen to ..when you think about it an actual band is pretty much played out with the 70's ..face it its just a new day artist most of them don't play there own music .and thats real..they all can't be like the purple 1

Ouch! eek Unless they hand out head phones to everyone attending live shows, you've got issues. Even Prince couldn't expand his arsenal until he got rid of Bobby Z and went with real drums. And Prince's whole sale for the album and tour is real musicianship.

Ok. Here we go:

Stevie Wonder (Still. If he were to jam somewhere with someone u know he'd be kicking ass!)

Herbie Hancock (one of the funkiest, all-round talented keys player ever - everything he does has his personality - a living legend)

Ben Harper (stacks of talent - diverse musical interests)

Sting (agree with this choice - good musician - good ear for a melody)

D'Angelo (nice all-round skills - beautiful voice and incredible attention to vocal layering)

Lots of other artists, but if we're sticking to quite well known ones who have also achieved a good degree of fame along with their skills then these.

Plays instruments and has an incredible voice. When produced intimate and dry it can blow u away. Hasn't really ever fulfilled his potential.

You are so right on this one. Seal's work is absolutely wonderful, and like P, he is a true poet.
His current cd has been a real joy for me, and the cd with Kiss from a Rose, Bring it on, and A Prayer for the Dying is exquisite. A true Artist.

I'm going to define my choices as most talented songwrites

I'm with ya'll on the Trent Reznor thing, although he could learn a thing or two from P about a work ethic and finishing songs ( years between CD's, come on)

I CAN'T Believe no one mentioned BILLY CORGAN (Smashing Pumpkins). Not only is he a great songwriter, he rivaled P in the 90's for sheer output of brilliant music. Anyone remember when the pumpkins broke up and he released a multi CD set for the fans via the internet of tons of new material. He literaly made like 20 vinyl copies, gave them to friends, told them to burn MP3's and spread around.

As far as other great songwriters, Martin Gore from Depeche Mode, possibly the most underatted songwriter out there!!
