I like Outkast also but are they really that talented of musicians? Do either of them even play an instrument?

whats the point of actually playing a instrument if you can still come up with the music that people will buy and listen to ..when you think about it an actual band is pretty much played out with the 70's ..face it its just a new day artist most of them don't play there own music .and thats real..they all can't be like the purple 1

Lenny? Maroon 5? Second to PRINCE??? disbelief

Elton John can be argued, even though his music's been rubbish for the past twenty years.

I don't care for Tori that much, but I can recognize her skill and talent enough to see your point. She's got it goin' on.

No not 2nd to by far, but they are good instrument palying people to me.

Elton can be 2nd and I don't even own any of his stuff. I think he is damn talented though.

"After Prince..." Well if Prince is number one he'd have to be the next 19 places after that. The wee man is on a totally different level. Prince is a legend no doubt. Some of the artists that people have mentioned, yes I do like them but they certainly aren't legendary. So since it's after Prince I'm gonna have to name a couple of legends. Errmmm... certainly Bruce Springsteen... and certainly U2. drink

I've been asking myself this as well...if we are talking the pop/rock arena...in terms of originality and output...in the last 10 years we have seen...

Beck
Bjork
David Bowie
Ani DiFranco

but none I don't think can touch P..even now.

Definitely Beck. Also, I'm trying to figure out some more of the new school legends rather than the old school ones. I mean, sure you still got Stevie, Macca, Bowie, U2, Springsteen, Moz (yeah, I threw him in just cuz I love his work wink), etc. But what about the relatively new school cats that you'd might compare to Prince?

I'll give you Lenny, D'Angelo, Robert Randolph. But I'll also throw in Trey Anastasio, Trent Reznor, Tricky, The Chili Peppers (even if they ain't funky no more), etc. I also said OutKast (and yes, they can and do play instruments) because they're so far ahead of folks in the Hip-Hop game because of their creativity and style. But I don't know if they compare to Prince though. I don't even know if any of these guys I mentioned compare to Prince.

And if someone says Alicia Keys, I've got a brick with their name on it. mad

i can't believe some of the answers i've seen on here. Were talking about musicians, NOT SINGERS, NOT MOST POPULAR ARTISTS! the topic stated:

"After prince who do you feel is the next most talented musician out there today?"

of course before Prince, there was Stevie so that negates the TRUE guy who started it all.

musicianship is a very touchy & biased opinion when coming from someone who does not know what TRUE musicianship is about. IMO, after Prince, there was one guy who wasn't that popular but that MF'r plays every instrument in the likeness & vibe of P and wasn't a half bad singer either. I said it again and i'll say it before. Chuckii Booker. If you don't know, then you need to check out his 2 albums and you'll get an idea of what i am saying here. After that, MUSICIAN WISE, it would have to be Lenny Kravitz, Lenny is POPULAR and PLAYS ALL INSTRUMENTS on his CD's.

remember the topic folks... "we are saying After prince who do you feel is the next most talented musician out there today?" not most popular, not most succesful writer, not biggest sales..

most talented musician!!!!!

not trying to start anything, just my honest opinion, that's all

ok, serious answer:

cuz to me, she colors outside the lines and takes musicianship to another level. she's classically trained and she has a punk background, and she makes pop music. watching some documentaries and reading some articles about how she makes albums and collaborates with other musicians, i'm really amazed at her talent, and how understated she is about her abilities. not to mention i think that for someone who comes off as so bizarre, she's freakin' amazingly professional as an artist. for anyone who would balk at this choice, give Vespertine a good listen and tell me just anyone could create that - this is one of the most complex, intricate albums i've ever heard. a lot of that is thanks to her collaboration with matmos, but the whole thing is her, through and through. i think as she gets older and more established, she's really going to amaze us.

COSIGN 100% I love Bjork, she is absolutely brilliant and on an entirely different playing field than most artists today.

Anxiety, you hit the nail on proverbial head! nod

Talking about younger musicians? MUSICIANS, that is?

There is no one. Forget it. No one is in the same league musically.

Back in the day, Stevie WAS, but no one is NOW.

Remember, we're talking MUSICIANSHIP. NOT JUST singing, performing.

Beck is the only talent of today's music who comes close and Bjork MIGHT be up there except she doesn't play any instrument (although she can write notation so that sort of makes it okay).

Y'all seem to have forgotten, by way of the Britney-fied media, what a MUSICIAN is.
"he don't want me to whoop his hero, Eric Clapton, but i'm a get in that azzz!!"
