If it's so essential tell me what it means? What exactly is "giving angels"? My gf asked me this the other day and I had to admit I had no idea.

She gave her best?
I believe he's talking about Mayte getting pregnant and having his baby shrug

...As the world lay waiting like an embryo in a womb
She gave her angels that night in June
She gave her angels 2 a man because her man had none...

Unfortunately their baby would soon be an angel sad

Prophetic??

I was just listening to this song this morning, it's beautiful. I love the way it's crafted. It opens with this soft piano, almost like a lullaby, then just as you think the whole song's over, this blazing guitar kicks in. Definitely must be about Mayte getting pregnant, that was my first impression before.

The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I remember reading that it was about Prince and Mayte's first night apart since their marriage
She had 2 go 2 spain 4 summin' and "she gave her angels"

And now I'd like 2 turn your heart 2 a tale of sheer delight
A song of adulation, love and fear
No one loved him better, no one better sacrificed
She gave her angels that summer night

Fate as she designed it took her from her man
Destiny and love don't always go hand in hand (Hand in hand)
As the world lay waiting like an embryo in a womb
She gave her angels that night in June (She gave her angels)

She gave her angels 2 a man because her man had none
2 watch over him till she returned
- her man, her lover, her son
Her father 4 all these things he meant 2 her, she felt it right
She gave her angels that summer night {x2}

see? wink
...just another manic monday...

This is one of those songs that are so emotional that they go far beyond the simple concept of "song" methinks. I kinda get this feeling more and more with Call My Name.
"Goodness will guide us when love is inside of us... The Force will be with you, always"

Mayte believed in angels as a constant source of God's spiritual power watching over each of us. Apparently, when she and Prince were married and scoping out the ceremony logistics, the groom's side of the wedding party turned out to be a bit on the thin side and Mayte said something to the effect that it was good because that would leave room for the angels to sit. About She Gave Her Angels, the Crystal Ball booklet says:

"A true story about Mayte"

In effect, she 'donated' the angels watching over her to Prince for the time she was away.

I can't believe I had to just to spell that out.

I love the song too, but the over...drawn-out, endless, repetitive, ridiculous guitar solo is BAD...almost as bad as that dumb-ass guitar solo on Ur Still The One. Yikes...I fade out She Gave Her Angels right after he finishes singing...great way to end it smile

Well that's certainly not a fact. You realize they were married in FEBRUARY and not June. Some people crack me up.

THANK YOU! I devoted a thread to "She Gave Her Angels" a long time ago, and didn't get many responses. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, by Prince or any artist. The piano is beautiful, the lyrics are beautiful, and the guitar solo at the end is one of his best.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. He wrote and recorded She Gave Her Angels when they were separated for the first time after their marriage. I just shared the story about the wedding angels to give some background on Mayte's angel fixation.

Dude you are funny. Unless you are Prince you have no way of knowing this is true. So basically you are making guesses that may or may not be true.

Dude I don't even have the time of day for people like you. You asked a question and I answered it. Your hostility is a mystery to me. What does that gain me to post something I know to be false? What does it gain you to act like you've 'busted' me? I don't get it. This stuff is common knowledge that has been passed down through the Prince fanbase since 1997.

My problem is that you answered the question with the comment, "I can't believe I had to just to spell that out" like it's a fact and you are so much smarter then everyone else.

It's not a fact ecause Prince has never answered the question so even though some of you internet geeks already discussed this and came to your own conclusions this a fact does not make.
