Wasted Kisses... The best hidden track ever recorded! Anyone else like this one? Is it about Mayte? ______________________________________________

An excellent track, and the only really good song on New Power Soul. The arguments over what it is about are endless, so I won't even go into that. It is just unfortunate that he put 3 minutes of genius on that disc while the rest of the album is so bland. He should have saved wasted kisses for a better album.

My fav is the backward track on Purple Rain. it sounds go both ways. the most stupid hinded track would be at the end of Rainbow Children. you skip forward hoping for something interested and all you get in ONE, ONE, ONE,what is that about???

Wasted Kisses is a great track. I dont know why ppl don't like Come On?! Thats a great funky groove. Has anyone heard the vox accapella? Amazing!!!
UI think it's so funny how new albums come with staickers saying "With bonus track" or "includes hidden track!" bonus? from what? if its a new album, theres 14 friggin' bonus tracks!!! stupid. And if u tell me it's hidden....aaargh!!!! marketing execs should be made to shop in real stores! with no expense accounts!!! sorry it just boggles the mind, I'm not able to be sharp or witty as usual. Who said that?

My interpretation of the song is not about a failed relationship but about the death of his baby.
OVERDUE, THAT'S HOW I DESCRIBE THE HOUR, THE MINUTE THE MOMENT THAT I FIRST LAID EYES ON YOU--The first time Prince sees his baby. Think about how much Prince must have wanted kids and think of how agonizing it must have been for him to have to wait 9 months for this moment. Certainly "overdue" could describe the length of time for him to first lay eyes on his own child. I GUESS I KNEW, THAT SOONER OR LATER THIS POWER WOULD MANIFEST ITSELF INTO A RENDEZVOUS--The song is about kisses right? The power he is speaking of is the power of the kiss. Think of the power that a kiss holds. Enough to make two people want to be inside each other. Power enough to lead him and his wife in the DANCE ELECTRIC-sexual union. Kissing leading to sex, leading to pregnancy, leading to the baby's birth leading to THE MOMENT HE FIRST LAID EYES ON THE BABY. SMALL DARK ROOM, THAT'S WHERE I LET YOU SMOTHER, IN FRONT OF YOUR GUT TORN MOTHER, WHY SHOULD I CARE?--According to the article that Si posted a link to in a past PPML (THANX SI!!), the baby's life support system was finally shut off, most likely causing the baby to smother and gasp for final breaths. So say that this is the hospital where Prince and Mayte are faced with making the final decision on whether to keep the little baby alive on machines or let him rest in peace and pull the plug. Why does he say Gut torn? I think this is Gut Torn and can be taken in two ways. Gut torn--Mayte's gut is torn from having to make this decision on her precious son. Have you never been gut torn over a situation? I'm sure like most of us, you have. OR Gut torn--Literally, having just given birth, her gut is torn from the experience of child birth. I think it would be both at the same time. Also, he says "Why should I care", I take this as him not wanting to care because it is just too much but you can tell by the way he sings the word "CARE" in the song that he really does care. CHEAP PERFUME ALL OVER THOSE BURGUNDY STOCKINGS, THE ONE'S I TIED YOU UP WITH, I SHOULD HAVE JUST LEFT EM THERE.--OK, this is the line that perplexed me and I understand you are offended that I would even mention Prince taking his baby's life. I was at a loss to explain the burgundy stockings and the possibility that this could mean that Prince performed a mercy killing on his child was the only thing that I could come up with to explain this line. If Prince did do something like this, I don't see why everybody would be up in arms. From what I have read on the baby's birth defects, they were quite extreme and 99.9% chanceis that the baby suffered through every living moment it spent on this planet. Is it so wrong that Prince could have been compelled to stop the suffering of his child? Which is worse, to stop the suffering or make your innocent baby live in hell?? Another "theory" that occurred to me about this line is that it is directed at Mayte. So say that there they are in the hospital room watching the baby expire as they have agreed to take it off the life support system. As they are standing there, Prince turns to Mayte and says, CHEAP PERFUME, ALL OVER THOSE BURGUNDY STOCKINGS, THE ONES I TIED YOU UP WITH I SHOULD HAVE JUST LEFT EM THERE. OK, so you know how Prince tried to script out the baby's birth to coincide exactly 9 months from the date of their marriage, well that would mean that they remember EXACTLY what they did on that night of conception. Perhaps Prince tied Mayte up with some stanky panty-hose and he is now saying he never shouldabecause it put him in the mood to give her kisses all over which led to intercourse, which led to conception, which led to this horrible day in his life. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Hmm...I too thought that this song was referring to the death of his child. The sound of the life-support machine flat-lining and the gut-wrenching scream of anguish seem to support this, as well...(sigh)...now I'm depressed. All 7 and we'll watch them fall.

LOVE THAT SONG!!! Listened to it today as a matter of fact. Boy can I relate.....I wasted alot of kisses myself.
About his child....."why did I waste my kisses on you baby?" Nah....I believe its about Mayte, and their failed relationship. ______________________________________

The flat line sample made me think of love dying..... .never did I think of his baby. ______________________________________

Wasted Kisses and Come on are cool, but the reason to own NewPowerSoul is The One. I just think The One is one of his greatest songs ever.

I think it's about both--Prince often tries to write songs that have some dual meaning. The reason that he links the two (i.e., the death and the breakup) is probably because the death caused a great deal of stress in their relationship. After the death, Prince coped by touring relentlessly, Mayte tried the dance project, and then she moved away. I think Prince probably felt some resentment towards Mayte for the baby's death. That may seem calous, but it's a natural human reaction to a tragedy of that magnitude. I think this song was just part of the grieving process--which is why the lyrics are subtle enough to be deniable. As far as the "stocking" reference, as eloquently stated above, I think this is him alluding to the baby's conception. No Candy 4 Me

Wasted Kisses: GREAT!
New power North, always dug Come On &
the vocal only version is very cool. think my favorite Come On is the
live from Leno July 98 version. That funky shit is ~hard hittin'~ "Midnight is where the day begins"

I've heard the theory about wasted kisses before, but the song that is definitely about Prince's chld is Until U're in My Arms Again. Listen to the lyrics, it mentions how his baby was taken from him abruptly and how Prince will be broken hearted until they are reunited in the afterlife. "I dare any man in here to look in his eyes and not feel...something."

This post is so sad.
I hope the poor guy has a child someday. The JWs believe that they are going to live on this earth again with their deseased loved ones.Maybe this is why Prince believes in this. Who can blame him? I think the line about the stockings has to be if we hadn't made love that night, I should have just left them there, this wouldnot have happened.

CHEAP PERFUME ALL OVER THOSE BURGUNDY STOCKINGS, THE
ONE'S I TIED YOU UP WITH, I SHOULD HAVE JUST LEFT EM THERE I had another thought about this. Perhaps he is talking about the night that he and Mayte conceived the baby. Maybe he tied her up and they had sex. He's saying that he should have just not done it and then he wouldn't have had this pain. That's my guess on that last verse.
