I agree. In my opinion, many tracks on 1999 can sound pretty dated, but I love driving alone and bumping this song. It's got great energy and is very passionate.

one of my favorite songs of all time...there really isn't anything better, more truthful, more passionate...than this song!!!

This song....is just amazing. The bitterness, the frustration, the huge outpouring of raw emotion near the end....It's breathtaking. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I disagree. I feel that the 1999 album contains songs that sound like they were made just yesterday. I don't feel like it has that "80's" sound. I can still put it in my car today and blast it out of my windows like i just don't care. I luv Something in the water does not compute!!!! I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

To me the only thing wrong with the sound is that it tends to be muddy and flat. The whole album needs remastering like fish need water. 1999 IS Prince. This post not for the wimp contingent. I can see the reasoning behind putting the one released though on the album. 1999 was a dance album for the most part and the original is more on that trip than the slower outtake. Same as Around the world in a day...there was a reason he put the less drum heavy version as opposed to the more boucey outtake. It just fit better. Personally, I think outtakes sometimes sound better is we are really used to the version that is already out there, and the outtake ends up sounding fresh esp when it's for a song that is 20 years old. The re-recorded version from the "Purple Rain" sessions is even better.

In retrospect some of the songs that sound less new wavish stand out a bit more these days, like Lady Cab Driver. So I can see the re - recorded version on this set as well. Dont get me wrong I like both versions, but the 1981 demo is a personal favorite.
