Your summer playlist By Herald staff Monday, May 24, 2004 You can only play that old ``Hot Fun in the Summertime''/``Raspberry Beret'' segue so many times. Summer is a special season with its own warm, mostly carefree sound. So we propose 10 songs + a headbangin' bonus track - mostly new, a few just slightly used - that will sound great pumping out of your iPod at work, out of the boombox at your beach barbecue or out of your car stereo when you're cruising with the top down on Storrow Drive. 1) Toby Lightman, ``The River.'' Neil Young, Al Green and Bruce Springsteen have all memorably taken us downstream; only time will tell if newcomer Lightman's ``River'' reaches similar classic status, but for a soulful dip this summer of 2004, it will more than do. 2) Modest Mouse, ``Float On.'' Roll into summer with the windows down and the blare of this upbeat, good-news song. The indie punk-rock, off-kilter sound is distinctly Modest Mouse: refreshing, cool and carefree. 3) Prince, ``Cinnamon Girl.'' Song of the summer? It's not the Neil Young ditty, but a slab of delicious, infectious Prince pop from his ``Musicology'' ... mated to a lyric of passionate post-9/11 reflections. Only Prince could pull that off. 4) The Push Stars, ``Claire.'' The opening track from the Boston band's recent disc is one of those wistful, hook-laden, almost-love songs that fits any summer playlist. 5) Toots and the Maytals, ``Pressure Drop.'' A white-hot remake of the reggae classic from their new ``True Love'' disc featuring wah-wah guitar frosting from Eric Clapton. The only thing missing is a bottle of Red Stripe. (Toots' ``Time Tough'' remake with Ryan Adams would work nicely too.) 6) Franz Ferdinand, ``Take Me Out.'' OK, it's been around for a while. But these Glasgow lads know how to party. A slow intro, kicked up by infectious bass beats makes this a must-have booty shaking tune. 7) Cypress Hill, ``Busted in the Hood.'' This gangsta-fired remake of the Beastie Boys' ``Paul Revere'' is just a good summer riding tune. 8) Counting Crows, ``Accidentally in Love.'' With its giddy chorus, snappy backbeat and breezy melody, this jubilant track from the ``Shrek 2'' soundtrack is the musical translation of a great summer fling. 9) OutKast, ``Roses.'' Andre 3000's funk track deserves a 'pod spot for the humor factor but this song combines the toilet talk with great beats to get you dancing. 2003's ``Speakerboxxx/The Love Below'' is still kicking out the great tracks. 10) Dispatch, ``The General.'' Boston-based Dispatch is playing a final hurrah on July 31 at the Hatch Shell - free! - so get ready by dipping into the bin for this surefire summer anthem from 2000's ``Bang Bang.'' 11) Killswitch Engaged, ``The End of Heartache.'' Faith No More meets Slayer in this brand-new track from the western Massachusetts band, sure to be a summer mosh-pit fave. Given that I've heard that A Million Days was to get radio airplay, and Call My Name is being made into a video, I think that Cinammon Girl would be, politically, the best next single from Musicology. It's not the best song, but neither was Musicology. | |

Since we're talking about which song could/should be the next single, I heard something interesting today. I was having lunch at a TGI Fridays when half-way through my meal, Life O' the Party played over the sound system. TGI Fridays plays a generic Muzak, Pop music sytem, so it was very pleasantly surprising to have that on while I finished my lunch. What's the use of being young if you ain't gonna get old

I thought about it and i'm a Prince fan which means if they think about it they make think "I've heard this before" and turn it off. Since I first heard the Musicology CD, I thought Cinnamon Girl was one of the only worthwhile songs on the disc. I know a lot of people don't like it, either for the music or for the political message. Well as far as politics and music combined, in my book, it's a damn sight better than Live 4 Love.
I think Cinnamon Girl would make a decent single, especially for summer; those live drums and the acoustic guitar make for a spunky, dry heat hit. I can always imagine the wind blowing in my hair when I listen to the song, so it wouldn't take much for me to imagine hearing it on the radio while I cruise through town. It's been hard for me to like this whole disc. I admit it's grown on me somewhat, but the album feels rushed and disjointed to me. It feels to me like Prince is kinda working out a new sound and put this album out as a transition into that sound. I'd like to fast forward and get to the full-bodied version of this new sound. I've read a couple of posts that argue for Call My Name or A Million Days as the next singles. If you find a way to skip the slow intro, I've got no problem with A Million Days. While I like the intro and the way it builds up to the rest of the song, I think it would be a bit too slow-paced for radio play. Just my two cents on that one. As for Call My Name . . . well I've heard several people suggest that Cinnamon Girl is like 17 Days or other songs in that vein at best, or an unwieldy song altogether at worst. Well, Call My Name sounds like every other ballad/slow dance joint that Prince has ever done. That's kind of a problem with him and slow songs, they all tend to sound the same -- especially the drums and keyboards/piano. What does Call My Name do new that his other ballads don't do? Sure there's a lot of political commentary hidden in there, but it's still a slow love groove. While I'm just as interested in innovation as Prince is, I think the better slow jams came in the forms of If I Was Your Girlfriend and I Love You In Me. I don't want him to reproduce those sounds, but I want his new music to transform sound, shake things up the way those songs did. What I loved about those songs was that they took a format and turned it on its ear. Do it again, Prince. Don't fit the mold. By the way, Reflection would make an interesting single. | |

this is amazing
im seeing so many clashes of opinion about this tune. For me Cinnamon Girl is one of the stand-out tracks on this wrecka. i hope it is the next single Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Wow. Feel like such an outcast!
I honestly enjoy Cinammon Girl. To me, it is light, easy on the ears, and I often myself tapping a finger or foot, bobbing my head. It's a nice jam for a car ride or simply laying back and enjoying the setting sun. Now, a Million Days remain me too much of an offshot between Dolphin and Gold while Call My Name sounds like Prince was trying extremely hard to grasp the magic of Adore. I agree with the suggestions. Cinnamon girl is not a song to be taken seriously. it is not a thesis but an light, enjoyable commentary. Hey, everybody entitled to his/her opinion. _________________________________________

When I used to work at a clothing store, they used to play 'So far, So pleased' from Rave. They had their own radio station, maybe something like Friday's has their's set up, although I never heard 'So far, So pleased' play on my local radio station, or did it?

Strangely, a friend of mine who plays in a hard rock group heard CG over the speakers in a record store thought it was cool and asked me about it... However when I played it for him on my iPod and he got a chance to hear it fully, he looked less impressed Maybe it's best experience from a distance... | |
