Can you hear all the different instrumentation when you listen to a Prince song? I was listening to Musicology today and especially What do U want me 2 do and noticed how
prevelant the bass is in that song and got to thinking and wondering if I could pick it out on other tracks on that record and other ones. Sometimes I noticed its easy for me to pick out and sometimes not. Also sometimes when i'm listening I can pick out just about all the instruments and then sometimes I can't tell. Listening to Prince certain periods of his music he has a lot of hornwork in so i've pretty much gotten to the point where I can tell the sax from the trumpet even if they are in the same song. I was just wondering have yall gotten to the point where you can do this also and on the bass parts is there a way to tell easier what part it is in the song if you're having a hard time picking it out. Just some things I thought of. [This message was edited Sun May 23 22:21:05 2004 by Love2tha9s] "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. yep.
going to a conservatorium of music in high school really helped, cause you LEARN how to appreciate music when you're taught to listen to all the instrumental parts at once. i have no problem doing this, but i know a lot of people have trouble listening and working out what the instruments are, especially in fairly busy music like a lot of Prince's stuff. i admire people who don't play music who can do this and really LISTEN to the whole and its parts and not just glaze over and wait for the big chorus as much of modern pop music encourages people to do. what i love about prince's music is the intricacy of his vocals and horn/synth lines and of course the prevalent INTERESTING bass lines, not to mention the interesting scales and textures he uses on guitar and drums. he's very much the opposite of most of today's dumbed-down music. generally speaking, his music reeks of intelligence (with some notable exceptions). . I know they're there on about all of them but sometimes can't pick it out. Also aren't there different kinds of bass guitars/ Which in turn would mean sometimes they sound different right? This is the essence of what I love about Prince's music. I can listen to a song for the 100th time and hear something new. It never gets boring.

Yes, it's a gift that drives my friends crazy.
I: "Wait! Rewind it! Did you HEAR THAT KEYBOARD PART???" My friends: "No. (yawn) what are you talking about, you freak?"

The different instruments? Usually, yes. In some cases, not until sometime later.
But there are sounds within many of his songs that I still discover 20+ years later. This happens with a lot of music, though. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Let me try 2 clarify this...
U seem 2 B talking about the Bass Guitar parts in particular here. Prince has changed his Bass sound and mix a few times over the years. In the earlier days with the Fender Jazz Bass, he intentionally mixed it low in the mix. It was always tough 2 catch some of Prince's funkiest Bass lines 'cause of the mix. One of the only exceptions 2 this is D.M.S.R. At a certain point (maybe '86-'87) he started using his Warwick Bass 2 record with. The Warwick Thumb Bass has a distinctive tone that naturally cuts through nearly any mix. Rhonda started using the Warwicks in the beginning, but now uses Fender, Lakland, etc. Right around 'Emancipation', Prince started 2 up the Bass Guitar mix consideraby, and has done so every since in nearly every track. Hope this helps. Easy, G. "He's a musician's musician..."

Strangely enough, I'm very observant when it comes to Prince's music. Lovesexy's a good example...there's a whole heap of shit going on in the background, but because of the dense music and busy arrangements it's hard to pay attention to everything throughout. Listening on headphones makes it much easier...you can hear more subtle and intricate things that you might have missed before.

I was listening to Lovesexy on headphones last night and I was blown away by the intricate details that I had missed.

And, sometimes, there's even a difference between headphones and pc+headphones.
I recently was floored by the acoustic guitar run Prince does near the end of Reflection, right after he mentions going outside to play his guitar. I can hear it only on computers, for some reason. It's the coldest run!!!

I find you can hear every instrument and every note if you smoke b4 hand. Then apply headphones. SO WHAT IF WE'RE CONTROLLING ALL THE OIL, IS IT WORTH THE CHILD DYING 4?
