Prince Books - The Good and the Bad

I only have one book...Purple Reign. It was decent. Not sure how the P community received it. I am now waiting for the Vault to arrive. I am thinking on getting a few more..unless the Vault is all I need? I am thinking that that is going to be more of an intense read (with really small print).

Just wanted to ask...what books out there are good...and which should I stay away from? Is the vault all I am going to need? Also are there any out there that have good pics...more fluffy and fun that factual?

Just wondering what the consensus is on P Literature.

Thanks!

The Vault will give you the information - it's an amalgamation and update of Uptown's previous books, and thus services as a reference guide and a chronology.

If you want a biography, I suggest Per Nilsen's D.M.S.R. (since it's also from the Uptown stable in a way). This book only takes us upto the end of 1987 though.

Alex Hahn's The Rise & Fall of Prince is good too - although retreads a lot of what D.M.S.R. offers in a little more detail (although this book goes upto 2002 (or 2003, I forget) ) - but is a little more salacious.

There are older books, but they've been outdated now in terms of information and timeline - although they can still be an entertaining read if you can pick them up cheap.

Great information, I have read D.M.S.R. and "The rise and fall..." I think the rise and fall is way better, i'm glad to see there are otheres here that aren't complete "rise and fall..." haters, to many orgers can't get past the title

I saw Per Nilson's book. As he is with Uptown...I consider him respectable...though as you say it only goes until 1987...apparently the end of P's most creative and prolific period...according to the description I read. Yes was looking more for biography stuff. Thanks for the info!

How does the Purple Reign book rate amongst you guys?

I have damn near every book written on P. Purple Reign is cool, cool pictures. I'm surprised no one mentions the book "Pop Life". That's a great book. That set the stage for D.M.S.R. Also, u need 2 check out the book by Dez. "My Time With Prince". It's excellent. To hear from a brother who was there from the getgo, that's priceless. When I did a session with Andre Cymone, I wanted 2 ask him all kind of shit, but I knew that wasn't cool 2 do at that time, so I didn't.

I haven't read Dez's yet, and think DMSR is the best written, and Pop Life a close second -- definitely the first really good, thorough bio. And I found a lot of good in Possessed as well.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

I'm sure Andre would have a thing or two to say about P...if just asked. Joking of course...but that would be someone I'd like to hear from. Simply cuz I don't know that much about Andre and I know they had a falling out.
