I'm really falling for the Symbol album.

I'm thinking i'm liking it even more now than when I first got it. I started listening to it after

I rebought it after something happened to mine and am realizing how much I missed it.

I'm really really enjoying it this time around. There are some great tracks on there.

BlueLight is just a beautiful piece of music and The Max, The Continental, Loveme2tha9s,

Damn U, 3 Chains of Gold and God Created Women are right up there with it. BlueLight has

some of the best horn work i've ever heard. Since i've gotten this album back I can't stop

listening to it. WOW!! Very good musical performances on this album. Even if there were

no lyrics the sound would be great. Glad I re-bought it!!

Blue Light, Blue Light, Blue Light.

Blue Light is probably my favorite track. I didn't like the album too much at first, as a whole - but after many listens, I now find it does work in its entirety. I really enjoy Continental, The Flow (I know most people hate that one), Seven, 3 Chains O' Gold, and The Sacrifice of Victor. Heck, I even like My Name Is Prince. I think that had it been stripped of a few tracks, lost the Vanessa segues, and done away with some of Tony's stuff, it would've been considered a great album. Nonetheless, I prefer it to D&P and TRC.

Yeah I think if it had cut the Tony M crap rap it would've been even better. I just bear thru

his parts and enjoy the background instrumentation when he's on. Was he on this more or

the D&P album? I don't have a complete Prince collection so besides Symbol and D&P was

he on anything else?

I've always like this album. I've noticed that others on the Org trash it for various reasons. Blue Light is my favorite song on this album. It makes me laugh everytime I hear it because I can see him doing exactly what he's singing about. Plus, I love the island feel of the music. I could do without the rap that comes and goes on the CD and I really don't mind the "Vanessa" segments either. So no, you're not alone. music

I LOVE this album! I could take or leave the Vanessa stuff, but I could definitely do without the rapping lol BUT otherwise, I love the album all the way through.

Blue Light, 3 Chains O'Gold, Sweet Baby, and 7 are some of my favorites, but I can honestly say I like ALL the tracks on this album biggrin

...the 'Vanessa' parts don't bother me at all...matter of fact, some parts are crazy funny as when she's reporting & the fan nearly pushes her out of the way she yells 'ASSHOLE!!!' that makes me laugh everytime!!!...lol

I think it's his most frustrating album - it had some of the most exciting music he had recorded in years (coming off of Batman, GB and D&P), but it was overlong, erratic and filled to the gills with Tony M.

Love 2 the 9's encapsulates the problem with this album - it starts brilliantly with an immediately memorable melody and intricate playing, but then devolves into a hideous rap at the end that totally destroys the song (for me, anyway).

...and, as I said before, I think it is far too long. You can edit this disc down to a very enjoyable 35-40 minute album. However, this problem was not unique to Prince. A lot of musicians seemed to feel the need to utilize every minute available to them on compact discs when that format began to dominate the market, and that resulted in a lot of very bloated albums.

I think that the "Vanessa Bartholomew" bits are hysterical!

hey ur not in it by yourself, i love Love 2 the 9's but when that rap comes in with Tony B. and Mayte, gosh, i just want to skip it. The song is perfect before that part comes in. But When God Created Woman is my shiznit. Oh my gosh how i love that song. It moves my soul...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

"The continental" is one of his best ever jams! Powerful, fresh, doesn't sound like any other Prince song, very underated as Prince Jams go! Though I can see why this track is overlooked though! The Carmen Electra bit is boring so I just stop it when the song changes into "Tell me how u wanna be done" (Why the fuck would Prince put an identical remix of this crap on "Crystal ball" is beyond me!)

This is great when it's great, but a lot of it is destroyed by far too much rap. My Name Is Prince sounds like a textbook MC Hammer cut. Sexy M.F, Love 2 The 9's and And God Created Woman are far and away the best cuts. Blue Light is great reggae. WTF is up with Arrogance though?

I loved this album from the moment I had brought it. It had so many good songs on there. The only songs I didn't like was The Flow, Arrogance and the Vannesa bits but everything else was top notch for me.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I find its high points, Love 2 the 9s, the Flow/Arrogance (hell yeah, sound totally differnt than anything he's done), Sexy MF, God Created Women, Damn U, more than make up for the not-so-high points (3 Chains, My Name, Continential/The Max (just too generic for my taste))

I think this is right on for the most part. A frustratingly mixed bag. Although I would probably be even more critical. “Blue Light” is a “nice” song but it’s totally derivative and not particularly inspired. “The Max” is really is on the brink of corniness, for me it depends on the day I’m listening. “Three Chains of Gold” is some Queen inspired drivel that I don’t really get. “The Morning Papers” is too much of a light rocker for me. “My Name is Prince” is grating, I can’t listen to this song at all. However, “Sexy MF” is classic Prince, “Love to the 9’s” minus the rap is an excellent song, “And God Created Woman” and “Sweet Baby” are two more often overlooked classics. “The Continental” is a solid funk jam. “I want to Melt With U” is probably my favorite Prince house music inspired track. “Damn U” is a great balled, probably on the second tier of Prince Ballads, just beneath Adore and Scandalous quality. I can take or leave “7”, “Arrogance”, and “Sacrifice” and I most definitely will pass right on by “The Flow.”

I really didn't appreciate this album first time I had it. Now its at the point where i'm getting

stuck on tracks, like I just wanna hear it again. That definitely did not happen the first time

around.

It was always a grower with me. I'd put it down ...come back to it months later...only to be entranced by damn u, or sweet baby...songs I skipped over before...put it down and come back months later to discover the beauty of 3 chains o gold.

I consider this album to be a classic musically. Way better than D&P IMO.
