I used to like it, but it seems real immature to me now...I can't really listen to it anymore

It's a kick ass opener for that particular album. I love the energy behind it.

the only problem with it, is the lyrics, both cringe worthy are unpoetic
and it does go on for a bit too long

never liked it. However, that one line "My name is Prince" has become iconic.

No. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I've always been torn about this one.
The music is funky, and the line "My name is Prince & I am funky" has become a classic. But it struck me as just about the worst rap I had ever heard. Even Tony sounds skilled on this song compared to Prince. I also think the lyrics are arrogant, almost threatening-- "till I get your daughter I won't leave this town" But when I saw the video to 7, I saw that he kills the Prince with the chains over his face who sings "My name is Prince." Soon after this, he changed his name. So I think that the song is a representation of the side of Prince's personality that the public might like, but Prince himself sees as negative. He has been battling with it since Darling Nikki, Temptation, The Black Album & Lovesexy. Check this song out at:

I Like it Alot and the Video was Really Cool with Prince and the Chain Hat and Mic Gun and Fancy Symbol gloves he was Cool with the Rap. I liked the Dancing and the Fire and just the whole vibe. It was Different for Prince. I Loved that Whole Time and he Looked a Gorgeous Muther Also.

Oddly enough,I prefer the single version of this song,as opposed to the album version.

haven't herd the single version, but it's probably not that odd, single versions are usually shorter, which is perfect for a sub par song like My name is prince. That's why they always edit down shitty movies and songs. Would you rather see a shitty movie that's 1 1/2 hours or 2 hours?

Brilliant, but 4 late 1992, maybe about a year too late! In the same epic vein as New Jack songs like Bobby Brown's "Humpin' around", Pebbles "Giving you the benefit" and Jermaine jacksons "You said, you said"! U know epic NewJack stompers!
The intro is cool and the lines "Do that, do that somebody" are cool throwdowns as is the line "You must become a Prince before ur a king anyway" or something like that! Tony M in general gets the best lines on this album but anyway..... More newjack/hiphop then Newjack pop but of course done in Princes way! Damn that song is loud! Vid again a Newjack type thing with the dark backalley vibe going! Prince and NPG tried hard to be hip on both their albums and at the time I thought it came across well! Of course the rest of the "Symbol" album would completely throw u off if u thought just more songs in the "My name is Prince" vein! "Yo man, what?, she came, where?, there, oooo!"

" But then doesn't he follow it up with "funky fresh for the '90s" or something equally Will Smithian? I have to admit, I hated the track at first, but it has grown on me over the years. Though seeing the video on VH1 recently almost completely destroyed my good will.

It's probably wrong to say it, but I think Tony M did a great job on this track. Maybe it's time he was shown some respect for his contribution to Prince's sound around this period? OK maybe not... -----------------------------------------

The single version is nice and short and gets straight to the point. It doesn't have that long introduction, and the Tony M. rap is edited so that it concludes with the line "You must become a Prince before you're king anyway".i think it sounds better, more focused than the longer album version.

It sounds to me exactly like something MC Hammer would do. Perhaps this is because of the Tony M influence.

Take away Tony M's rap and it's a great song. Totally fun. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Love the sense of humor in this song. It makes me laugh every time I hear it. Or at least, if it wasn't meant to be funny, it is to me. Either way it's one of my favs.

Love this song...Great as an intro...even better as a statement. It's SO full of ego. I like some of the remixes to it. Even instantly made fun of by me and my friends "My name is prince, I shot Mike's monkey" I recently saw the arsenio show version...freekin' ROCKS! Noone could pull off a song like that...let alone make it a single.

Love the song up until Tony's rap, which, as always, is useless. The lyrics for Prince's parts are hilarious, though, and the song is pretty funky.

I just can't see him performing it these days, lol. Even without the JW issue. A 45-year-old man hoping around yelling his name. At the time though, I thought it was just marvelous. Totally him. Put the spoon down honey, come on let mama feed you!

I was just joking on this song with my sister. I really liked it when i first heard it. The beat & guitar is funky. When i listen to it now i'm like that is the wackiest song he has written. He's singing & rapping at the same time. The song turns more whack when that Tony M. guy opens his mouth. Who told him he can rap? Overall i still get a kick out of listening to Prince give you a taste of his rapping skills. :MUSIC:
