Push It Up, One of Prince's Worst?

Wow I was listening to NPS today (it's been a real long time since I had) and I forgot how bad the song "Push It Up" is? Then again so is "Freaks On This Side"! barf

Does anyone else consider Push It Up to be one of Prince's worse? IMO, it is one of the worst songs I've heard by any artist whofarted

I'm a big fan of NPS.

But Push It Up truly is a piece of shite.

Mind you, I quite like Freaks On This Side. For me, that moment where he sings 'Congratulations! You're in the New Power Generation!' is a great Prince moment.

I don't think Doug E Fresh was a great addition to the NPG, to be honest.

Yeah, It pretty much sucks. In fact the whole album with the exception of the last three songs pretty much sucks. Come on, The One, I like funky music, those are great. I think the one is one of his best songs ever.

I honestly like both those songs, and the NPS album as a whole.

I used to love this song when NPS came out. eek And live it was great too - all those dudes with sweaty armpits pushing their palms skyward.

It's the best of the worst tracks on NPS. The best being the one, come on and wasted kisses and the worst being the rest. neutral

This album as a whole is very uneven. IMO, Mad Sex, Come On, The One, adn Wasted Kisses are great songs. Freaks on this Side and Push It Up are very bad. Doug E Fresh??? All I remember was the concert and him singing/rapping Who rocks the hardest the artist? feeling ill
when the melting pot stirs how we gonna take it?
when u can't tell him from her how u gonna fake it?

I agree, the 3 tracks you mentioned are really the only ones I can tolerate from the whole cd. lol

I have to say I really like Push It Up and Freaks on this Side. Push It Up is just a fun party song and shouldn't be seen as much more than that. I like the flow of the rap in the middle:

Now I wanna know who's ready 2 show me
Get on down with the one and only party ambassador
Flip styles like a spatula mac-tacula
More Legend than a new Acura
Body tone stone while I rap 2 her
Capture her thinkin' I'm a mac 2 her
Just because I'm attracted 2 her
But the fact of the matter is the dance floor's phatter
The crowd's on fire as we push it up higher

You can tell from the lyrics it's just a bit of fun! As for Freaks, I love the deepness of the synth bass and those wierd synth horns that seem to go all over the place with that organ note penetrating thoughout the track underneath. And the spooky overlaying of voices.

If you don't like this track - then glug glug like a mug! biggrin

"Jughead" is completely different really! What is peoples problem with Tony? Damn, it's like he ruins whole Prince albums just by being on a couple of tracks! Y can't u bear a minute of Tony! "Jughead" to me is a great track that is funny as well! A real good group effort too (as is "Push)! Damn so much cool energy in both "Push" and "Jughead"!

"Push it up" as 'Metalorange' is just a fun party song and I agree that the rap in the middle is really cool too, one of Princes best really!

Rest with the exeption of "When u love somebody" is pretty naff 4 me I'm afraid! The production don't suit me at all really!

I used to hate this track, and it used to spoil the album for me. But I listened to the album last night and it was the one I really enjoyed (maybe because I usually skip it). There's this weird noise hidden in the background (sounds like someone trying to start a car with no gas) that just seems to pop up randomly here and there. I found myself focusing on that trying to work out what it was. The next thing I knew it hit me! This is a funky assed track! NPS is by far his most underated album. Certainly not his best, but so many fans are quick to just piss on it because it's not what they were wanting/expecting when it came out.
