Graffiti Bridge is awful!!! I went on a business trip to Denver, so to fill my 3 1/2 hour flight I brought various Prince cd's. I listen to The Gold Experience, Dirty Mind, Controversy, and the Graffiti Bridge. With the exception of The question of U and Joy and Repetion, this album is the worst he has ever put out. The lyrics and arrangement of the songs are cheesey.
Tick Tick Bang is his worst song ever recorded. Can't Stop...sounds like a song Britney would sing. NPG- U can tell he is trying too hard.... The Time songs are a joke... This cd is now serving as my coffee coaster..

another Prince album which brings some great responses ... it did get a great review in Rolling Stone ... 4 stars i think .... I do think - u gotta respect the man - under all the pressure to make a new movie with a different theme and story than Purple Rain - he made one that wasnt Purple Rain 2 .... even tho clearly the studio wanted a Purple Rain 2 ... using Tevin C , George Cl , and Mavis Staples added a different sense to the album - the Time tracks too (alth they clearly had the Prince feel ) I dont find my self listening to GB too often , but I like it better than Emancipation .... --- totally feel with ya on TICK TICK BANG - the worst !!! unlistenable ....

Almost every post-1987 Prince album (bar the WB contract fillers perhaps) gets a great review stating "Prince is back with his finest work since Sign O The Times..." And then the next album will come out and the review will say "Prince is back with his finest work since Sign O The Times..." well, you get the picture! As for Grafitti Bridge: Great tracks, but they don't really fit together in a cohesive album. It's more like a sample of the work he was doing at the time rather than a definitive statement/vision. After a long time it being shelved, I pulled it out the other day and don't think it's so bad at all...

The original Dirty Mind-era version of Tick, Tick, Bang! is much better. Graffiti was an ill-conceived and poorly realized movie. I think the addition of other artists worked against the album. He also uses a lot of material that had been on the back burner for a long time. Joy In Repetition is fantastic, as are Elephants and Flowers, The ? of U, We Can Funk and a few other tracks, but many elements detract from their overall effect! They were written years apart and the disjointedness is audible!

I like Graffiti Bridge quite a lot. It's not Prince at his strongest (except on "Question Of U" but it's still a nice little album all around

wow, I can't believe how much put down that "Tick Tick Bang" gets. I think its a great song. I'm curious why people think its bad, and I'm serious.
It has great melody, and the lyrcs flow very well. The falsetto is off the hook, especially the lat part. he has a cool concept with the song, and the lyrics have a direction that it keeps, like "Ur such a...", and he does that a few times. I think its a great song, i guess its just me.

Graffiti Bridge would have been better off being 2 seperate albums.
One 'vinyl length' album of the 'Prince' songs, and another 'soundtrack' album with all the other associated artist's tracks (which was the original plan).

GB I think is a huge flash of Princes genius.
Its more eclectic then SOTT. More funkier than Batman or D+P. Just as rocky as PR. And all that producing for other artists and still pulling out good songs. The only bad songs on the album are The Last Fashion and NPG pt2 for me. I think aside from the cheesyness that the title track is very good. Cant Stop... , Joy in Rep' , Q of U , Still WSA Time , Release It.....just wow. Easily he most underrated for me. Would be perfect if he sang Release It and Round 'n' Round and the other artists song were taken off.....but still great stuff. I disagree with ya Hating it. I love Prince's tunes and the other Artists songs were Cool. I like the mix on the album. I wish Prince didn't give up so fast on this project . I really loved the Song We ARE THE NEW POWER GENERATION.... I Wish he would Include this sometime in his Repetoire.

I agree with Boris.
It should have been two different versions. The Prince songs are almost all great. The other artists' tracks are almost all crap.

You've only named the 'so so' ones...besides the other mentioned that are good songs, 'Question of U', 'Joy in Repetition'...'Elephants & Flowers is a nice song and so is 'Thieves in the Temple'...Tevin Campbell's 'Round & Round' I like too, and the others are not so bad...'Tick tick bang' is not that bad either, some people trip too much, that is not the worst song recorded, I don't know what is, but that one isn't. If it's not the best, it sounds like a regular song to me, ain't nothing wrong with it. I just saw Graffiti Bridge again and I think it has an important message about failure and succeeding. I'm sure Prince was inspired at one point to write this one, since it does send a positive message about, you don't know success until you know failure' and if this film failed, as in some views and the album as well, then that's what it takes to succeed as Prince is doing now. He had his high points and some low, but that's what will continue to take him to the top despite what anyone says. As long as he believes it, even when no one else does, he will continue to do so... I LOVE "GRAFFITI BRODGE", both album and movie! Music meant to be fun right, well this is proberly prince's most fun, dancey album ever! yep, production very dated in places but who cares right? If u do care about dated production, well u need to get a life! Besides most pop music dates eventually! Check the neptunes/timbaland sound in 10 years time, be like what newjack or parts of "Grafitti bridge" is now! That thought still doesn't mean anything to me though!
Title song is pretty shit though and obviously, to fit in with the characters in the movie, most of the Prince songs are serious and the times of course are not! This plays off very well i think! This is a soundtrack album but like ALL soundtrack albums, u do not need to c this movie to enjoy this album! Considering the wealth of things going on in this album, it's amazing how it all sticks together so well! By far prince's most ambitious project (and he has done quite alot of those) and considering how well it all worked, Prince deserves way more props these day's 4 this album!
