It's kinda aggressive for a Prince track. Of course it's a classic - I still remember back in the 1993 it's absence from The Hits - compillations was widely disputed in the press. Not just because of the name change, but because it obviously is one of his trademark cuts.

Love the song up until Tony's rap, which, as always, is useless. People please. Can anybody here seriously claim that Chuck D's rap on 'Undisputed' is better than anything Tony M. did? Give the guy a break. The only mistake Prince made was having Tony M. rap live - all he could then was SHOUT like some army sergeant. Stop the Prince Apologists ™

Anyone rapping in Prince's songs is dreadful. It doesn't belong. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I still love this song.
(everythingn EXCEPT for Tony M.) I love the intro with the musical flashbacks -- which is necessary for an arrogant song like this when Prince is asserting dominance and wants to reminds us of his past funk. I actually like the lyrics ... especially lines like "on the 7th day God made me "... and "I know from righteous, I know from sin, I've got two sides and they're both friends" == oh my, that last classic line summarizes why he's been intriguing and impossible to stop listening too over the decades. Love that line. The Greatest, most effective, line, however, is when he says "when you hear my music you'll be having fun. That's when I got you, that's when you're mine. To tell the truth .. tell me what's my line " ... That's arrogant , yeah, but you know it's true .. his music has held you in his clutches for years ... and you know you know his next line line so admit it you're his and and just scream: : MY NAME IS PRINCE!!! Oh god, so much fun, this song is. And it could've stopped here for me, totally don't need tony m. . . [This message was edited Tue May 25 7:30:53 2004 by SynthiaRose]

I always thought that he shoulda cut Tony M's rap outta 'My Name Is Prince'. Not cuz it's
bad or anything, just cuz the song's called 'My Name Is Prince' so he ought to be the only voice on it. Oh, and it's not exactly one of my favorite songs, but I do think it's very tied up with the whole symbol album storyline, which is why it contains 'arrogant' lyrics. They're there deliberately, cuz they tie in with the story and progression of Prince's character in it, from arrogant womanising rock star to settling down with the 'one he was meant for'. Taken out of context, the track doesn't stand up so well, as it comes across as a bit childish.

"....until I get your daughter, I won't leave this town!...." Yes Yes!, that tunes a banger most definately Loved blastin' that track and disturbing the peace back when I used to ride the school bus... Great stuff "..My work is personal, I'm a working person, I put in work, I work with purpose.."

Yeah, It's so energetic. I hate some of those corny lyrics, but it's still cool. "Face Down" reminds me of that song, I feel the same way about those two. Average rapping, cool beats, lot's of great energy and attitude.
