Why do the critics say that Prince..... In the past, I have read several articles on Prince and his music and I have noticed that quite a bit of critics say that Prince lost his black audience after Purple Rain. I even have heard critics say that Prince made the Diamonds And Pearls CD with the intent on recapturing the black audience. I HIGHLY disagree with this assessment. From his first single in 1978, the r&b charts have embraced Prince and as a matter of fact, he has had more success on the r&b charts over his entire career than on the pop charts. Look at all of his #1's and top 10's he has had on the r&b charts as compared to the pop charts. In the mid to late 90's when pop radio neglected Prince, he was still having top 10's on the r&b charts..so where in the heck does the assessment that Prince needs to "reclaim" his black audience come from?

I dont listen to anything the critics say. I think saying he lost the black audience is bullsh*t!! He never lost the black audience. Thats the thing I love about P. His music is for everyone, always has been, always will be because he doesnt conform to just one type of music which is great. If he did things woulds be very boring. Hes doing his thing and myself and my friends who are all races, Puerto Rican, White, Black, whatever we all love his music. Did you order a pizza ma'am? Prince- UTCM

I went to only one Prince concert back in 1997 and I was shocked at the mixture. IT was a lot of whites, blacks, hispanics, etc. There were LOTS of blacks

90 percent?!? Maybe in Iowa. But the shows I've been to (all over Texas) have been a wide variety with no obvious majority. . [This message was edited Sun May 23 15:27:39 2004 by Universaluv]

Prince hasn't lost his Black audience to tell ya the truth Alot of White Fans left him after Purple Rain and only Hrad-core fans Stayed. Really kinda Sad how People just liked Him when he was Popular now Maybe he's working to get back the lost White Audience with a Greatest Hits Tour.

I dont think hes lost any particular color audience. Sure ppl move on and dont like certain artists as much as they maybe once did, we all do it sometimes, we just grow away from things. But to say he lost, or lost the majority of a certain color group really is bull. Real fans no this isnt true. To say that he lost certain groups because of some of the albums he put out with different styles of music is the reason is a crock. The critics dont know what theyre talking about obviously, which is why I usually dont read what they have to say and just judge things for myself, whether it be about music, a movie or even a person. Because its all really ridiculous, how in the world could they know he lost a certain audience? By taking a couple of ppls opinions? Give Me A Break! Did you order a pizza ma'am? Prince- UTCM

Then have one. If you're going to Vegas you don't need Prince to have a debaucherous time.

What does this have to do with him losing a certain audience? I mean sure he moght bring back the mainstream but knowing todays music taste he probably wont. I mean Im sure hes gaining new fans all the time. I hope he does get wild again tho, Id love to see him do Darling Nikki But anyways that has nothing tto do with this thread. Everyone that listens to prince is Black. Some are just very very light-skinned. [This message was edited Sun May 23 16:47:42 2004 by squirrelgrease] If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

[This message was edited Sun May 23 15:27:39 2004 by Universaluv] Exactly...Prince has had a wide ranging audience for over 20 years now. I can't speak about what percentage appeared to be the majority or minority at a specific gig that I didn't witness, but in totality he probably has the most variety of backgrounds in his fanbase of anybody working today. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I guess mass media lives in their own little bubble & they like to create stories just to start a buzz even when their foundation is made out of nothing. I think it's all bull-shi* & I don't buy any of it.

Prince needs to reclaim both his black audience or any audience for that matter. He could do that by making good music, which is something he hasn't done is almost a decade for some unknown reason. You know, we are talking among a fan group here, but as far as Prince goes, he is in need of a crash cart to his guitar, some mouth to mouth to the piano, and some ressusitation to his mic. - "Don't worry..., I won't hurt you, I only want to have some fun."
