I don't think it's the best choice, but "Call my name" isn't that bad of an idea. I don't think it will push the sell's like "Life o' the party" would have. This kind of reminds me of Diamonds and Pearls. 1st single was "Gett Off" which got the album going, then he released D&P as a single and eveything kind of slowed down until "Cream" came out and took D&P to #1. Maybe the next fast song will push it to #1? cool

So Who's picking the singles? Remember the problem Warner said was he wanted Certain songs and They wanted others? Who's picking this ODE To Manuela? I'd say Prince. he shoulda picked Something More Radio Friendly and top 40 ish. Something More POP. That's like ADULT Contemporary. Prince Needs to Stick with YOUNG IDEAS not OLD ones because Old Ideas AIN'T GONNA work no Matter how NOBLE! Young is Better for Radio! Young Audience NEEDED!

Call My Name is an okay song, but surely NOT a single-hit

Call My Name is obviously targeting a certain market/radio airplay. There's nothing wrong with that. Except for us Princeheads it is highly unlikely the same listeners who dig Call My Name would care for Cinnamon Girl. Call My Name is a great single for the audience he is trying to reach. Everyone I let hear it loves it. I'm talking about some hardcore RandB fans! So no I don't feel you on this one.

I love the song but as far as it being a hit... only time will tell. But does it really matter if its a hit? Its still a good song. I tend not to worry about chart position, because that doesnt make something good or bad, its up to the listener. Its definately R&B and thats cool but I dont know if it will be huge.

Yeah Adorable2,
From your point of view I agree with U!
Although, my choice would be a double A-Side: "The Marrying Kind" / "If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life". As B-Side I would choose the ONA aftershow performance of "Whole Lotta Love" live at Nighttown (Rotterdam, Holland, 03-11-2003)

well, maybe a full weeks worth of sold out shows biggrin

then again, even that would only give him 100k max sales in a week.

i don't see why people have a need to have thier enjoyment of princes music validated by chart position, but to each their own ...

If not for the shows, who knows where the album would be on the charts?

Well, the article in Billboard stated that he would have had the chart positions he attained, regardless of whether or not the CDs from the shows had been counted or not.

Still, you gotta admit, this album is doing way better than most of us thought it would (other than the overly delusional fams, who thought that it would be the biggest selling album of all time). I thought it would have some modest success, just because he was getting smarter with his marketing, but I had no idea it would last this long, or do this well.

Call My Name is an excellent choice for a 2nd single. The others are good, too, but as a 2nd single, there couldn't be a better choice in my opinion.

Now, as for the topic at hand, I'm not wild about "Call My Name", since it sounds like every other friggin' Prince slow jam. That having been said, FROM A COMMERCIAL POINT OF VIEW, it is a good idea for a second single. It will, no doubt, get him some R&B airplay. I'm just glad he didn't choose it as the first single, since he's made the mistake of leading off with a ballad for the last several albums.

Now, here's hoping he doesn't lose interest, and make this the LAST single from this album. There are a lot of songs that could work commercially on this disc, getting him airplay on R&B and "Mix" format stations.

A lot of you are saying "radio airplay", "commercial", "targets R&B"

Im just 1 of these people that think rainbow children was wasted... it should have been rainbow children instead of musicology as his "come back" (i know he didnt go anywhere but you know what i mean.) OK there are strong spiritual references in the album and I am in no way a JW but musically, spiritually, nostalgically and honestly my fav album of his.

Just dont want this album wasted in the same way... dont know if i got my point out so you all understand... but I cant wait for the day when i can dance in a club in Melbourne to a new prince song...

PS: its my birthday today lol lol

^Happy birthday!

I think Call My Name should do pretty well, it's the song off Musicology that ppl like the most next to ICPC.

Personally, I wish it was TGE getting the Musicology marketing treatment.

It would've been H-U-G-E.

The big question is, out of all the people who bought the album, how many really like it?

I dont think Dear Mr Man is a bad song, just not strong enough for radio and too dull to have a strong video clip. Call my name was in regular rotation on V103 Chicago as soon as the album dropped. It's a safe single for black radio. I would have picked a million days or cinnemon girl.

The bigger question is: Out of all the people who bought the album and don't like it, how many of them are going to buy the next release and every subsequent release and keep coming here to call Prince's music shit? You got a theory for that?

I bought it, I like it. It's easily the best album he's done in over ten years. You have to go back to the Symbol album (1992) to find a better one. I agree with some of the things you say, but when it comes to Musicology I think you are wrong. So the big question is can you admit that you are wrong? I mean its not going to be too embarrassing for you. Afterall I just saw a post with someone vigorously claiming that its not Sheila E. in the 'I wish u heaven' video!!??? hey man don't worry about it!!!
