I was reading this book about bootlegs by Clinton Heylin, which is actually quite informative about the phenomenon in general. It didn't mention Prince in anything other than passing, but it did have a quote from a sound engineer that gave me the impression that sometimes, when a show is really really good, they feel moved to leak it, or are asked to do so by the artist. His name was Joel Bernstein.
As you know, he's addressed through the mic by Prince toward the end of DMSR during this show. He's also thanked in the credits of Lovesexy. I had the strong impression that he told the author that he couldn't come right out and mention this show and its release, but that he was referring to it obliquely. That either he or P decided this thing had to see the light of day, and thus its unusually good sound quality (although the bass gtr is a bit lacking.) But -- I could be wrong. Every now and then
