Everybody had forgotten the original Family version until Sinead came along and took it to another level. Then suddenly Prince started playing it live, as if to childishly say, hey, this is really one of mine, you know! It's a great song whoever sings it - but if it wasn't for Sinead we wouldn't even be discussing it now. Hit the nail on the head. Now if Prince would go back to the original master tape and put out a studio version like the original one by The Family but with a beat (structured more like Sinead's) then I might change my mind.

Prince always seems to send the song into a big over the top melodrama with the horns etc. I want to see him just do a full lengh version. Just him and the piano. Now that would be nice My alltime favorite version of that song is Prince´s version from 1991....the one he sang in Argentinia ( Buenos Aires ) and later in Spain( La Coruna) ...Sinead can´t even come close to that version...just Prince and his piano, no Rosie , no horns, no Sinead....perfect !!! Go check it out, you´ll love it . What a shame he gave Screams of Passion away to the Family. Two wasted opportunities, should ´ve kept them for himself like he did with Kiss. Looks like i'm gonna have to go hunting! "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

Ok. Here's my breakdown of some of the versions out there.
The Hits Version: One of the weakest. Its ok, but for me this song is not a duet. I love Rosie, and I think her vocal on this is good, it just doesnt suit the song. ONA Live: This version is made by Candy's solo, a great solo that distracts from the fact that that he doesnt sing the complete song. I quite like this version, although the horn playing for that little 7 chord refrain does my head in.....this aint goddamn Kenny G. In fact i think that is the way prince marrs this song the most when he plays it. Way too much with the horns. A short solo at most is all thats needed. This song should be stripped down. The Family: The original, the way it was intended.....but NOT the best. I know Prince loved how odd Claire Fischer's strings were, but these sound like they're playing to a completely different song....its almost painful. (BTW I cant hear the music to this version without thinking of Eternal Flame by the Bangles). Sinead O'Connor: The song that made it well known, and there's a reason....its fantastic. Im not really a Sinead fan, but this vocal sums up all the pain of loss that is suggested by the wonderful lyrics. Prince fans can dismiss it all they like, but there is no getting around the fact that this is the best version out there, with the exception of..... Nude tour version: Whatever version you get is good, but in particular Im thinking of three that I have: Wembley, London Aug '90: Segues from Aint No Way into the best vocal of this song he has EVER done. So much passion in it, and musically its close to Sineads version. Nude Tour Rehersals: The closest thing to a studio sounding version by Prince. Its great soundboard quality, and he actually sings one of the choruses (almost unheard of on that tour). Spansih Harem version: Made up of 2 recordings but he does a blinding piano solo in the middle. THESE ARE THE ULTIMATE PRINCE VERSIONS, GET THEM AT ALL COSTS.

I have to agree with everything that crozzauk has to say on this subject , i always loved the family version and i couldn't believe taht prince had given this song away to a protege group and not record it for himself. But sinead took the song to another level and it became a masterpiece , that even prince couldn't surpass. Thanks to Mr. Fargnoli for suggesting to sinead to cover this song , for if he hadn't managed sinead at the time , she probably wouldn't have even heard of the original.

thanks for all your replies.
after a quick statistical analysis i can reveal that: 14 liked sinead's version best 9 liked princes version best 4 like the family version best adjusting for prince bias on a prince fan website, the analysis reveals a definite thumbs up for sinead o'connor. now to quote 'freeze' Okay enough already with this song ... granted it is good but he has been playing it for like the past 10yrs all the frigging time..... I think this is one Hit that he can retire and play something else in concert like " 4 Ever in my Life " which I would love to see performed live
