Lovesexy: Is It Good Or Not?

I heard that his 1988 album, Lovesexy was his worst selling album ever. I also heard that Lovesexy got mixed reviews. I don't have the album so I wouldn't know about it, but I don't know if I should buy it or not. What do you think about it? Do You think I should buy it?

if u luv prince buy it.....i like the album, its different doesn't sound like anything else i've ever heard from any other artist. also if u listen to it now, even though it was released in '88, it sounds like it was just released.

thats one of the reason's why i love p so much is cuz his music is timeless, i can pop in purple rain and blast it like it came out last week!!!!

but anyway, get the album, enjoy it, love it, the only thing i hate is the one continous track...ehhh.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

it's part of the "purple patch". 1999, Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT and then Lovesexy. now that is a very impressive run of albums that equals the output of Stevie Wonder's in the 70s.

It was widely underrated at the time and by the critics

It is Highly "overrated" here on the org.

It's a classic and a masterpiece. buy. listen. then judge. headphones highly recomended.

I've never been a big fan of the overall album, but I wouldn't try to stop you from buying it. "Anna Stesia" is one of those essential Prince songs.

I agree... Anna Stesia is the savior of this disc. (and conversely, I think Alphabet Street is dead common.) I think Lovesexy as a whole is fairly uneven. It has a very "fresh and airy" sound to it that I enjoy, though.

It's my favourite.

I feel it's the one Prince album that truly had a cohesive 'theme'. Lovesexy isn't just an album - it's a way of life, in musical form! I suggest reading the lyric sheet while you listen... though you may not get swept up in the 'sexispirituality' of it all ( I invented that word! It's mine! razz ), you will at least be better able to enjoy some truly happy music made by eight truly happy people! biggrin

What kind of question is this?

Lovesexy is only his best album of all time. I do believe that only if you were there in '88, could you fully understand the era as a whole and understand why it is his best album to this day. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, after you buy it and give it a listen.

Absolutely...there was something very special about '88 when this album was released. I can't imagine not owning it and i find it odd that some fans don't! yes

unremarkable

I was there when it was released...to me, it was the beginning of the end. He'd been flawless up until that point. Then Lovesexy came along--way over-produced, spirituality-obsessed, and with a 12" produced by someone other than Prince. It was the 80s' Rainbow Children concept-wise, but sickly-sweet, pink and light. After that came Batman, at which point I gave up hope. From "Adore" to "Arms Of Orion" in two albums...that's religion for you.

Isn't an opinion a wonderful thing....

Is Lovesexy good, bad or indifferent....well, ignore the album sales as they wouldn't even stock the CD in the US because of the album cover being banned (too offensive for the US....what a contradiction in terms!!)

In my opinion there's a lot of garbage being spouted in this thread, typically by die-hard early-days fans and spirituality haters, but I'm entitled 2 my opinion. I just got out of the car after putting on Lovesexy 4 the first time in years, and my god.....I was singing the whole way in, and I'll b singing the whole way home.

Yes, it's got plenty of gospel, spirituality driven tracks like Eye No, Anna Stesia, Lovesexy and Positivty.....but that's the whole point.....that's what makes it such a great album.....it's supposed to 'uplift' even the hardiest of spiritual bad-mouths out there. I'm not remotely religious, but I'm spiritual.....and 2day will b a good day because it got off 2 such a good start!

biggrin biggrin

Both albums are very religious, occurring after personal traumas. Both albums also show a sudden change in production values.

lovesexy was the first prince album I bought that dissapointed me. A rambling mess compared to previous albums. I really thought he'd lost it when he followed it up with batman. Thankfully, that dip in creativity didnt last too long.
Mind you, the Lovesexy tour was the greatest musical experience of my life.

LOVESEXY IS ONE OF THE BEST PRINCE CD's!!!!

If you want something different, I'd say buy it. I was actually playing it this weekend, twice at that. I always keep it handy in my car and I love most of the songs on it.

It's Prince at his most creative and daring.

confused Squiggle's just wondering if it can really be true that Lovesexy is Prince's "worst selling album" ever.

So am I - NPS, For You, Rave, The Vault - there are loads that must have sold less than Lovesexy.

Don't believe everything you read. I love it. But that does not mean you will. Buy it, listen to it, and and come up with your own opinion....

I've never "got" this album or the hype that surrounds it.

Out of the 9 songs i find Glam Slam, Dance On, When 2 R in love and Positivity i.e 4 tracks to be very weak.

Now there's no doubting the quality of the other 5 songs but there is no escaping the fact that half the album is weak.

Therefore Lovesexy is not IMO a classic album.

Also I'm afraid IMO [and other non-Prince fans I've spoken to on the subject] Prince's music from the 80s, generally, does sound dated i.e. can be dated back to the 80s. This certainly inlcudes Lovesexy and Purple Rain.

I've never listened to Lovesexy and felt it was religious, it's my all time favorite album. I've been listening to it for 16 years now and have always felt it was a spiritual piece. That's too bad that you would get that impression that it was religious.

Now TRC on the other hand is laden with man-made, "religious" overtones. I can't see comparing the 2.

There is a huge difference between spirituality and religion... look into it if it piques your interest.

Great comparison. I always use the same comparison to Stevie Wonder's phenomenal run in the seventies-- in which he became the ONLY artist to win THREE STRAIGHT album of the year Grammies-- when talking about Prince's 80s output. We haven't seen two artists quite like SW and P in the last quarter century.
By the way, the live set that Prince did when he called Stevie up out of the audience to do a long version of Maybe Your Baby is one of the greatest things I've heard.

"Lovesexy" was sort of a letdown to me when it was released in the 80's. I still think the album is uneven and very overproduced. I hate the "one track" shit that makes it impossible to skip tracks. But of course "Lovesexy" features some classic tracks like "Anastesia", "Lovesexy" and "Dance On". But it will never be my favorite album, in fact it wouldn't even make it into my top 10.

Lovesexy's good, yeah, but it's soooo overrated here.

Dance On, Glam Slam, Alphabet St. and Eye No aren't anything special at all. They're enjoyable, but they're just nothing really brilliant.

On the other hand, Lovesexy, Anna Stesia, When 2 R In Love, Positivity and I Wish U Heaven are incredible.

Wow though, that one long track idea may be one of the stupidest, most flat out absurd ideas in recorded music history.
