I will say that Lenny has never really struck me as an outstanding musician, but I will say that I'm glad he's around. I think Lenny and Prince are extremely different as far as musical styles go and if he wants to follow in the footsteps of Musicology - fine.
What's sad is there ain't a lot of Black folks that are different out there. All these rappers pretty much look alike and so do all the R&B guys, and no one really says anything about that, but the minute someone is a bit different - they automatically are a Prince wannabe because Prince is pretty unique to the Black community, but he isn't the only unique Black guy out there. There are plenty of Black rockers and punkers and so forth, but they don't get that much attention in the mainstream so they have more of an underground cult following. I'm sure if you saw or heard a number of them they would get blamed on copying Prince too, like it ain't possible that they may be emulating some White musician. Be happy that we have brothers like Lenny daring to do his own thing even if it just so happens that his hair resemble Prince. It looks a hell of a lot better than that nappy fro he had. Actually, I prefer the dreadlocks, but I'll give a thumbs up to anyone that looks sort of hippyish. LQ

I gotta give props to Lenny, his music is deep, but a Prince he'll never be! Lennys music deep? My nine year old could come up with better lyric's then Lenny! All I got to say is he should be happy he's got his look's.

Aww, heck. Never mind! Lenny's influences have always seemed to be a lot more rock-oriented (Zep, Floyd) as well as the obvious Mayfield, Hendrix, Prince, Stevie, etc. I definitely disagree that he's worn his influences on his sleeve while Prince has allegedly been a bit more subtle about his. You listen to Prince's vocal phrasing, for instance, and TONS of Sly Stone inflections jump out -- at least to those who are familiar with Stone's singing. The same applies to Prince's keyboard usage (he owes quite a bit, particularly in his earlier works, to Stevie Wonder). In fact, I'd say Prince is equally obvious in displaying his influences. But, I would. I think Prince's stage/public persona has always relied on maintaining an air of mystery or other-worldliness. Lenny's always just seemed more down-to-earth to me (though frequently stoned). [This message was edited Wed May 19 22:31:21 2004 by ThreadBare]

Co-sign. For example, "Camille" seems to be derived from to "Maybe Your Baby," "Family Affair," "If You Want Me To Stay," and/or a combination of the three. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

RupertZ said: Lenny Kravitz was a guest on Howard Stern today and he answered all Howard's sex questions with very cool and reasoned answers. He was good natured and good humored about it, but still got his message across and didn't get offended by anything. He also got to promote his album to millions of Stern's listeners. I would love to hear Prince be interviewed by Howard, but I just don't think he could handle it. He needs to study this Lenny interview though and see how it's done!
What are you? Some type of sick fuck? Prince would never go on Howard Stern's show because that would be degradation! Why in the hell should Prince take a cue from Lenny? Lenny has already jacked Prince's style and now his hair and you want him to go on Howard Stern? You gotta be fucking kidding me!

She used him to have fun and feel young and beautiful and he thought he was going to get paid but no such thing happened so who was pimpin who? Some people would enjoy Prince's work a whole lot more if they paid more attention to the lyrics and the meaning of songs like this one. It seems simple, but you have to be think in order to get what's going on. i've listened closely. they were using each other. "pimping" is hardly a substitute for empowerment. i never said anything about empowerment. i don't belive the song is putting anyone down though considering they both get what they want. no one is getting pimped it is pretty much an even exchange. it is a satirical song so i don't take the ugly comments seriously.

Had I not re-evaluated Stevie and Sly's work after becoming a Prince fan, I'd have never picked up on the similarities. Same with Jimi, Joni, Parliament et al. Hendrix, Sly Stone, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder... even the Beatles, Joni, etc. throughout his career, Prince has very deftly assimilated all of his influences, distilled them, filtered them, mixed them, and come up with something incredibly original of his own. the influences can be heard, but he almost always runs them through his Paisley Park/NPG/whatever Bozoputer and turned them into something brand new. Lenny, on the other hand, wears his influences on his sleeve. and while he is very talented at emulating those influences (Prince included), it's more of a regurgitation rather than doing anything new with them. on all of his albums, here's the Stevie song.... here's the Marvin song... here's the Hendrix song..... so i don't think he's necessarily copying Prince. i think their (same) influences just speak through them in different ways. LENNY has said in MANY interviews that he was obsessed with Prince in the early 80's and that Prince influenced him a lot! that may be so, but Lenny sounds more like the other people that influenced both him and Prince than he does Prince.
