Pussy Control-An underappreciated classic.

For me, this was the song that validated Prince's "rapping" (it's best when he does it himself), and the song is still a dance club anthem. People on this site routinely dismiss this song, but I think it is every bit as classic as "Erotic City". People who aren't even Prince fans know the words to this song, and you can even get a b-boy thug to confess that they kinda like it. What do you think are other underappreciated Prince classics?

Not sure how underappreciated they are but “Papa,” “Come,” “Willing and Able” and “Scandalous” come to mind. Pussy Control would not be on my list.

His voice sounds so cool on that song. Like no other song. He really pulls off the hip-hop persona on that one. pimp

I am sorry, but that song is a boiling hot mess. I started a thread about it a couple of weeks ago, saying that I didn't understand the hype about P Control. I was told that I needed to 'open my mind.' So I decided to give it a couple of more spins and it still is a boiling hot mess....the rapping, the usage of the 'n' word and his attempt to be hardcore left a bad taste in my mouth. sad Prince should vow to never rap again. He is so talented in many areas and rapping isn't one of them.

Classic like 'Erotic City'..... eek

Let me ask you this- When was the last time you went out to a dance club? You know one with skanky girls wearin' next to nothin' and guys posing and mugging? Have you ever seen the reaction when Pussy Control is played? It is a classic dance anthem-like Erotic City was before. That song is 10 years old and it is still routinely played in between whatever is the hottest new thing. Underappreciated.

I've never heard Pussy Control played in a club. Never, not once. I hear Erotic City all the time.

He has. Don't know the date or where...but I think that was definitely one of the songs he did live for that "tour".

Funny, the only song I heard outside of my house was Pussy Control. If always brought the house down. Actually for me the 2 stand outs of Gold are that one and Billy Jack Bitch (which never gets talked about). Those 2 are the only ones I have 12" for as well. FUnny thay were never released.

P-Control over time though, gets a bit annoying IMO. For the record I'm not a big fan of TGE.

Pussy Control does get played. Granted, it ain't exactly new so it's not like you'll hear it alot nowadays, but it is one of those songs that alot of non-fans are familiar with. Always surprises me how many people who realy don't listen to Prince know that song.

It is the least appealing on the Gold Experience. I won't go so far to call it shit because well, it beats the hell outta Strange But True. But it definitely leaves a shit streak in the drawers of The Gold Experience.

Agreed. You either like it or you don't. The posts alternate: "I like it." "It's shit." "I like it." "It's shit." "It saved my life." "It's shit."

I totally agree.

Not only because it's musically endowed, but the message..OMG, the message.

What a positive song!

Many would shudder at the title and think it's just about sex, but to their chagrin, it's about a girl abstaining from sex and focusing on her life and career. What could be more positive than that message to all young women...a message that says..."Wait".

Yeah, Janet did it alot nicer with "Let's Wait Awhile", but Prince did it much more poignantly, to the point, if you know what I mean.

I could image a lot of witnesses and other religious zealots cringing at this tune.

Just goes to show you that you can't just go by the title, but must appreciate the context.

I find that the same attitude is thrown toward "Annie Christian". Prince wasn't praising the anti-Christ, but was just stating how the anti-Christ won't ever win.

Positive, positive, positive!

Yes, very underrated.

I don't mind it as a song but it would have sat better later on in that album. Endorphinmachine would have been a much better choice as the album opener. geek

My best friend and I once drunkenly sang/rapped along with the song at a New Year's Eve party, introducing the tune to many who have never heard it. I think this was 1999. Keep in mind that this was a party mainly of white people, and not Prince "fans" (those that liked him but gave up after "7").

Well, it turned into such a hugely popular thing that we are called upon to do our rendition at every party that's held with this group of people, and we've sung it at 3 weddings. When we can't find my Prince mix CD, we've even done it acapella. At one wedding, after the "over 40" crowd went home (we're all in the +30 crowd) we did it acapella and got 50 people - many of whom had never heard the song - screaming "awwwww..... PUSSY CONTROL!" during the chorus.

And while I'm sure we're nowhere near the best white rappers around (that's part of the comical charm, I think), Prince is nowhere near the best black rapper around, so it all comes out in the wash.

Pussy Control is awesome.

"And the moral of this motherfucka is..."

It's got a helluva hook, that classic Royal Badness attitude, and it actually means something.

Great song, great opener, great album.
thumbs up!

I was dying listening for the first time to 5 woman. I didn´t hear the rest of the album for few days when I bought it, because I kept listening to that song over and over again. But I don´t know, there are lots of songs that I find classics and that are much better than his hits. Actually I like more the songs that aren´t as famous.

It seems to me that the fans who are calling the song "shit" are fans who maybe don't like hip hop in general.

Or perhaps it is that some fans have certain expectations of what Prince is. Meaning, he is not a rapper. However, I have found many a fan of hip hop, who don't know that they are listening to Prince, actually dig his hip hop influenced songs. It's only when you tell them that songs like "Acknowledge Me" and "Days of Wild" is Prince that they get all bent outta shape.
Just a theory.....

I love Pussi control though. It´s a great song. I like his "hiphop" music. I love for example 18 and over. Days of wild and Acknowledge me are cool as well.
