Madonna's Immaculate Collection vs. P's The Hits Both these compilations were recently (a few months ago) in some UK mag's top 10 compilations. I think it was NME or Q.
The Immaculate Collection was ahead, but I was just wondering what people here would choose, give that his Hits CDs annoy a lot of people here. Bare in mind that her Immaculate Collection was screwed over with edits and ommisions as well. I think Prince is way better, but he's more suited to albums whereas compilations work better for Madonna. There's too much u gotta leave out with Prince, I've given up tring to come up with my own Prince compilation. Madonna has some excellent albums but overall she's more about hits. For a hits-oriented artist like Madonna...a compilation like IMMACULATE is vey essential. That collection is a time capsule in itself of 80's pop music and basically the foundation of modern day dance and pop music.
For a musician like Prince...a compilation is good when it serves the casual hit's loving fan who wants 'Purple Rain' and 'Kiss' on the same disc. I do however love THE HITS/BSIDES and listen mostly to disc 3. I would salivate at the mouth though if there was ever an expansive box set with alternate versions and live tracks, etc. If they (P, WB...whoever) ever released each of his major tours on DVD...I would just die. All my concerts are on VHS and the quality is bad. Every minute of last night is on my face today....

I've worn out Disc 3, the B-sides, and never listen to the other two. Immaculate Collection gets frequent play in my cd box too.
