Whew, 1999 is a long album..... I'm listening to it now from track one straight thru till the end and it is long.
What is the longest single disc of prince's commercial catalog? I guess I would be talking track length and put together total run time. Not number of songs. Man i've been listening to 1999 so long I almost fell asleep on it. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Its got a lot of long songs on it. Automatic DMSR International Lover Dunno maybe i'm sleepy but it seems like from start to straight thru to finish it took a long time for it to go off. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

THIS IN MY OPINION IS PRINCE'S GREATEST LP. I KNOW MANY SAY PURPLE RAIN. BUT PURPLE RAIN WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED WITHOUT THIS GROUNDBREAKING LP. PURPLE RAIN SOUNDS LIKE A WATERED DOWN VERSION OF 1999 DESIGNED FOR CROSSOVERING TO A BIGGER MARKET.

1999 is a masterpiece. If I had to chose one Prince record for my desert island, it’s got to be 1999. ego tripping out

I don't agree that PR is watered down at all, though. It's just that we've been very familiar with it because of radio saturation for 20 years now. 1999 doesn't have that problem. They're both groundbreaking for different reasons. I dig the long songs on 1999. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

It wasn't a long album at all...you want a long album?? try listening to emancipation straight thru...you'll be snoring in no time.. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Emancipation is 3 discs. I'm not talking about number of songs or multi discs but i'm talking
about one cd. Also track length on one cd. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Man i've been listening to 1999 so long I almost fell asleep on it. LOL, you know when I first got this album on CD back in 1986 or so I used to put it on at night and go to sleep to it. Some of those longer tracks like DMSR, Automatic, etc... when they hit their groove they stick to it in a sort of hypnotic manner. I found it very soothing as a 16yo. I think might actually be the longest single disc and 1999 is the 2nd...

I wonder why they made the cd version a single disc, but still made SOTT a double disc cd like the album...Anywho, 1999 is my favorite album. I don't understand why so many people have a problem with the length of the songs. I have read on several ocassions that people thought that A-U-T-O-Matic was too long... ...that song is slamming and the length only enhances it, along with LCD, DMSR and IL...

Yeah I do think it was two album discs when it came out but I wasn't complaining that the
tracks were too long I was just stating the fact. I do think after listening to symbol that it is probably the longest single disc. I love the long tracks where they just play I just never really noticed it before. I love the early Time albums and some of those tracks (Cool and the stick are 9minutes plus). The original CD release of 1999 was confined to a single CD for financial reasons. In doing so, they also had to eliminate a track due to time constraints (a max of around 62mins) and Prince opted to cut DMSR. Later, 1999 was re-issued w/DMSR when longer cds (70min) could be reliably produced. SOTT is a longer album than 1999 and could not be fit on a single cd (60 or 70min) at the time of release. Technically, they should be able to fit it on a single 80min disc now, though.

Man i've been listening to 1999 so long I almost fell asleep on it. Unless you count "The Hits 1" or "The B-Sides" discs, then the "" album is the longest single disc in Prince's commercial catalog. It clocks in at 74:58. 1999 certainly has the longest average individual song lengths of any album, but as has already been mentioned, 1999 was conceived as a double album, not a single. It's only due to technology and finacial reasons that it appears as a single disc on CD. Whereas "" was concieved as a single disc, and only appears as a double on vinyl because of the limitations of vinyl's capacity.

NO WAY !!! Purple Rain is 1999 taken three steps further towards the rock side of the road, while at the same time showing Prince's further growth as a songwritter and musician. The songs were very well crafted and very melodic. People like to disrespect Purple Rain now days because it is the 'cool Prince fan thing to do' Say your favorite Prince album is Lovesexy or For You and dis Purple Rain . . . whatever?! Only if you were there when Purple Rain dropped can you begin to understand the impact it made an how incredibly HUGE it was. Otherwise you just can't grasp it . When 'When Dove Cry ' dropped people were absolutely amazed, baffled, and won over all at the same time. You can't appreciate how it captivated everyone now because the song and the sound it started have been ripped off and played to death over the past 20 years. Take a song like Lets go Crazy. In 1984 that song got major airplay on Classic Rock , Top 40, Hard Rock, College Radio, R&B, and Disco stations ALL AT ONCE. Just for a second, Prince sucsessfuly desegrated radio. Because of Purple Rain, the fucking guy was on the covers of CREAM ( a clssic rock mag) and Black Beat (an R&B mag) in the same month and it didn't happen because he was an old well respected institution like he is now. He got those covers cause he was HOT AS HELL in BOTH markets. Purple Rain was hailed by just about all critics for being a GROUNDBREAKING step in Prince's career as well as a groundbreaking step in modern pop music period! Prince and Purple Rain were ultimately credted with creating the funk/rock fusion sound that exploded in the mid and late 80's which spawned hundreds of imatators and led to Prince having to drasticly sqash that image he created in order to distance himself from the clowns who were copping his vibe. 20 years later it is easy to say this Prince album or that Prince album is the best or to even flat out dis Purple Rain. But if you were there, YOU KNOW BETTER. [This message was edited Sun May 16 1:52:12 2004 by chrisslope9] [This message was edited Sun May 16 1:52:58 2004 by chrisslope9]

Both albums are very different to each other with very different vibes and intentions. People now forget exactly how groundbreaking Purple Rain actually was when it was released.

Purple Rain is a condensed, more focused version of 1999. I prefer the meandering of 1999 because it feels more exploratory and experimental. Prince was still searching and discovering new musical possibilities on 1999. With Purple Rain he was perfecting what he had found with 1999 and the previous albums. The problem I have with Purple Rain in contrast, is that the songs aren't given time to breathe as much as they were on 1999. It was a much more commercial album. There's nothing wrong with that because there are times when you just want to listen to some cool, short, catchy songs. [This message was edited Sun May 16 9:47:20 2004 by whodknee]

[This message was edited Sun May 16 9:47:20 2004 by whodknee] I can't see how people can call Purple Rain a commercial album. When it was released in the early summer of 1984 there was NOTHING out there that sounded anything like it. When your first single HAS NO BASS , how commercial can you really hope to be. Purple Rain was very much a rock album and rock music was sort of dead in the water in 1984(the year P.R. was released). The album instantly changed the modern music scene. Again , I go back to what I said before , 20 YEARS LATER IT IS VERY EASY TO CALL PURPLE RAIN A COMMERCIAL ALBUM. If you are going to call it calculatedly commercialor 'sellout' commercial , then I also have to disagree. If anything, it was commercial in the way that Nirvana's Nevermind was commercial. Both were released and both sounded not quite anything that was being done at the time. Both drastically changed the modern music scene. Both have been ripped off and done to death so much since their release that there impact is becoming diminished.

"1999" is a short double album!
But it's a double because Prince had so much fantastic material in his hands. Just listen to the tracks that didn't made it: Feel U Up (1982 version), Irresistible Bitch (demo version), Turn It Up, Do Yourself A Favour, Purple Music, Extra Lovable, No Call U, Moonbeam Levels (A Better Place To Die). That are great tracks! When the format changed from vinyl to cd, he felt obliged to make longer albums .... and the filler-up tracks were introduced!
