Prince & Manic Monday

Just wondering if Prince has his own version of Manic Monday, I heard the Bangles version on the radio the other day and it still sounds great, especially the piano riff at the start.

Its quiet obvious especially now that its has Prince written all over it.

Prince's own version has Apollonia on vocals.

He does everything else.

At the ONA gig in Dublin (the sound check) He played the opening piano riff for a few moments, for a second I thought he was gonna do the whole the song, but he didnt.. but the feeling that washed tru everyone was amazing I can only imagine what it would have been like if he played the whole song. He played at the Xenophobia Celebration but had an audience member singing it "karoke night at paisley park" he said.
For some reason I think he does`nt like singing it.....

Actually, I believe it was originally written for Vanity to sing... perhaps for the 2nd Vanity 6 album; though, I'm not certain there ever was a recording with Vanity's voice on it. Anyone know for sure?

Trivia: "Manic Monday" peaked at #2 on the US Top 40 chart, right under Prince's "Kiss" which was at #1.

Shame the verses r lifted straight from the song "1999"! That is the way they are sung!

It's ok,but I just sing "1999" on the verses instead! I can't help it!

I can't remember, because i don't listen to it very often (worst boot ev-er) but on Rude Boy there's a version of Manic Monday - wasn't that a duet by apollonia and prince singing together?

It was written for Vanity to sing for their second album, yes. I still have my o.g. copy of that Rolling Stone issue. Also the one with P on the cover looking like Paul Stanley from Kiss sans the makeup. Cool post. I dig that better than the current cover, but's that just me.

Okay, i've just listened to this version on Rude Boy and it's definitely a duet between Prince and Vanity on there. Both sing the same melody, but Prince an octave lower (and slightly less conspicuously).

Really awful quality though. disbelief

Okay, i'm editing this. I'm not sure whether it's Vanity or Apollonia singing with Prince. Someone else no doubt will.

It's listed as being a duet between Prince and Vanity, though.

apollonia or vanity edit.

I have Rude Boy also , and it's listed as Vanity, but it definitely sounds like Apples to me.
I've always believed it to be Miss Kotero & the girls.

Yes, it was originally a duet with Prince & Apollonia(not Vanity). There is a version circulating, in crappy quality that is. I kinda like the original version over the Bangles' over-produced version. There are little subtle differences in both versions. If you listen REAL closely, you can hear Brenda and Susan's backing vocals on the Bangles' released version....check it out! nod

I don't think I have the early version of Manic Monday. But I do have a live version from the Celebration -- with a well-known Prince fan on vocals.

I can tell you that it was never recorded for Vanity. It was recorded at Sunset Sound, engineered by Peggy Mac, and was always scheduled for Apollonia's album. By the time it was recorded, Vanity was long gone. Also, it wasn't all Prince. Brenda Bennett also sang on the track.

BTW, if you listen to the Bangles version, you can still hear Brenda Bennett's vocals on the track. They just added their stuff to the original track.

Hope that sets the record straight.

But was it not written for Vanity? I'm not certain she ever got a chance to sing it on demo (at Prince's house) or otherwise.
