My least favorite song on the album. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

luv "White Mansion" "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

paligap said: I always thought it was a light, funny, laid back song, actually one of my favorites on Emancipation, but, outside of my family , no one else, young or old, seems to have any time for it...So I was just wondering... is it universally hated, or just not very interesting to most fans?
Say whaaat! That's my Favorite track on CD 1 along with somebodies somebody & Right back One day I wanna live in a big white mansion but not in the snow.Mine will be made of Stone. We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

It's one of the best on Emancipation. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Who gave you the idea that it would be "universally hated"? Sure, it's more something that the fans are able to get into easier than the casual listener, but there is ... as Wendy would put it, "mad genius" to it. The more electronic, rawer material on "Emancipation" really was the salt of the record anyway.

I was just wondering because, at the time, I played it for a lot of people - fans and others , and their response was usually a shrug, or "Nah"...and I didn't see it mentioned favorably in any reviews of the album, it didnt show up favorably in the UPTOWN polls on the album, and none of the fan sites seemed to mention it when they were discussing the album, in fact it was one of the few that never seemed to be discussed, at least, it was never singled out in discussions... it ...So, I started wondering, Damn, Am I the only person that digs this? Glad to see I was wrong!! " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

I like it but I'm not crazy about it. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
"You still wanna take me to prison...just because I won't trade humanity for patriotism."

One of my faves as well. It seems really personal and intimate. Whining? I don't think so. Melancholy maybe but the man's entitled to the full spectrum of feelings just like anybody else. In the top 10 on EMANCIPATION for sure!! (Along w/ Jam of the Year, Sleep Around, The Holy River, Sex In The Summer, Right Back Here In My Arms, Let's Have A Baby, Soul Sanctuary, Style.... I LOVE THIS RECORD!!)
And everyone is right about how long it took to digest. I would say about 6 months. For the first month I was just so overwhelmed by the sheer size of it that nothing really sank in. But after I got the "Words & Pictures" book at the concert it started to sink in. That set really needed lyrics with it, I think.

I like it enough to listen everytime it comes up. Its not a fave on the album but I don't hit
skip on the cd when I hear it unlike on some other Prince songs when I hear them. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.
