on ona tour prince played plenty guitar solos and rhythm guitar.he was the only player in the band.
with mike scott's addition did something chANGE?is prince playing more or less guitar.
is he doing only leads or he doeas rhythm guitar solos.
on which songs you think mike added the most on this musicology tour?

Although I do think MS is a great player, I do have to agree to an extent that Prince did put him in the spotlight often at some shows. I wouldn't dismiss him from the NPG, I'd just take him out of the spotlight.

I love the addition. Mike Scott is a BAD man, and it allows P more freedom to play with the crowd.

my opinion: mike scott frees Prince up from playing guitar so he can do whatever he wants.

Mike Scott is a MONSTER rhythm guitarist, anytime he's in your band it's a good thing. It's also totally essential for an arena show so Prince can do more of the frontman thing. On an ONA-size gig, not necessary.

although I hate Mike Scott with a passion , I gotta say his role in this new tour is minimal.

For both shows I attended I was behing Blackwell and the hornz so I saw Mike Scott for a total of about 30 seconds at both shows
I didn't even hear what he was playing most of the time...

Out of sight, out of mind...
Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

I'm thoroughly enjoying Mike's prescence on this tour. I enjoyed Prince's role as the sole guitar player during the ONA tour as well, but this tour is more of a "Rock and Roll/Soul Revue" than ONA was. Therefore, Mike frees Prince up to dance and interact with the crowd and other bandmates. Moreover, Mike play's a pivitol role in the acoustic portion of the show on rhythm guitar.

Mike Scott is the best guitar player ever to play with Prince in any of his bands. Having had the chance to experience many shows with him on the band during 98-99, I can say that Prince really loves the way Mike plays guitar live. They used to fuel each other into guitar battles, and it was so amazing to catch a glance of Prince admiring Mike whenever he got too funky... Mike Scott definitely adds a lot of funk to the NPG. Period.

Unless he stole your wife or girlfriend, there is no reason to "hate Mike Scott with a passion". Especially considering the fact that you have never met him.

Mike dissed Maceo on the rave 2000 DVD, P had to pull his sleeve to get the guy to stop ego-tripping straight through Maceo's solo (remember, this is when Maceo was a special guest, not a band member). If this is why people hate him, I can understand that.

I didn't think Mike dissed Maceo. They were jamming and Mike thought there was space for a guitar solo. I don't think he realised that Maceo was coming on stage for a solo.

It was a cool little unplanned moment to see P go over to Mike and tell him to let Maceo take over (interesting that they left that shot in the final edit).

As for Mike being a good/bad addition to the band. I think Mike Scott is a very gifted guitar player but I like the fact that on the ONA tour, Prince had to play guitar himself if the song required it - on something like the Lovesexy tour, you only see Prince ripping out the big solos and never really see what a fantastic rhythm guitarist he is.

As far as I'm concerned, the more Prince plays guitar, the better.

Mike Scott is as boring as they come. He has no stage presence, and there's nothing that stands out in his playing. Plus, he fucks up a lot of classic songs with guitar parts that are excessive and lame. I think he's a talented player, but in a guitar player, I want more life and character. I think Prince needs a good rock guitarist to mix things up a bit.

Yeah, from some tired old heavy metal band. Coooool!

Like Slash, he must technically be the greatest guitarist to walk the earth! woot!

Or maybe they could get the guitarist from the Scorpions, that'd be swell.

Rev. Scott is a velvet-smooth pimp, and a relentless rhythm guitar player...he definitely gets my vote. One of the only things "wrong" with the ONA tour (IMO) was the lack of a rhythm guitarist (and a couple of female background vocalists).

I think the emphasis on the musicology tour is more about prince the mass entertainer than being the musician he was on the ONA. I thought the whole open sound check, long show was more about the working and interactions of the (his) band. His playing was more from inside the song structure than on top of...

Now it's more his pretty face, pretty image, and pretty bank account

My guess is that the addition of an accomplished session guitar player rather than a particular character - melvoin - does suit the Musicology approach as the quality of the player mike scott is more important than whether he makes the prince sound more prince...
I feel pretty, that's enough

YOu know he is not. He have lots of bad times, but sometimes he is great too. Gun N Roses got some memorable solos, and he played great on beat it live, and give into me with michael jackson.
