The Best Prince Songs You Never Heard

Ben Wlliams has an article in Slate that discusses "The Best Prince Songs You Never Heard":

http://slate.msn.com/id/2100152/fr/rss/

His choices:

319
Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife
Let's Have a Baby
The Truth
Animal Kingdom
Digial Garden
The Ballad of Dorothy Parker (from One Night Alone... Live)

Being a Prince fan and a Blogger, I couldn't help but publish this rebuttle:

Different strokes for different folks. Here are some of my post-'93 picks:

Space
Dark
Shy
Gold
Dolphin
Dinner With Dolores
Zannalee
Dig U Better Dead
Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife
Calhoun Square
The Other Side Of The Pillow
Fascination
Mad Sex
5 Women
She Spoke 2 Me (extended)
When The Lights Go Down
Beautiful Strange
The Work

Ironically, Prince dismisses two of my favorite albums from this era, Chaos & Disorder and The Vault, as contractual obligations. Sign me up!

i love animal kingdom.
no funky blue cheese!

it's sly funny and has a nice little message and it's great music

wedding feast is even better.
its really funny(notice prince snickers at the end), it fits perfectly into the sequencing of a great album and it is a musical little gem. it would fit perectly in a musical but with prince style. a bit like 3 chains o' gold which is also a gem

now jughead; i don't know about that one

Dear God...what a horrible list! Then again, it's all about opinion and one man's sauerkraut is another man's whipped cream.

I think Digital Garden would be a fantastic song if it was fleshed out more. It's still pretty good as it is.

Well "best" is subjective ... and I don't object too much to Slate's list.

But Citizen Keith, I have to say that 319 is not lackluster .. I like it much better then Dolphin and Shh! (ugh!).

And Animal Kingdom... I love that, too. If you're gonna write a song about animal rights, it can't sound much better than this.

Also, I'm glad Slate gives props to Let's Have a Baby ... It's the sexiest, baby-making song ever...

"So long have I gazed into your eyes
wondering what they would look like on a newborn child
I cannot lie, when my hand is on your thighs
I'm thinking isn't it a miracle that Life comes from inside
So, long I've listened to your voice
wondering what it would sound like coming from a girl or a boy"

These are the most beautiful lyrics ever and the excellent vocal delivery fills them with so much delicate feeling.

And the innuendo of
"I can't even go for a ride... without about a little baby right there sittin' right by my side."

Perfect song on this theme.

Let,s have a baby definitely ranks, but when u think about it there are sooooo many great 'unheards' out there!!!

Savior-4 the lovestruck
Dark- 4 the heartbroken
The War- 4 those with time on their hands
Da Bang- 4 the horny
The Ride- 4 the bluesheads
When will we be paid- 4 those who don't understand
Friend, mother, sister, lover, wife-4 the ultimate swerve
This list could go on & on til the break of dawn, but lunch breaks don't last 4-eva!

PEACE

I totally agree! If a steady dance beat kicked in after the synth-and-voice intro, that song would have massive mainstream appeal.

My personal picks would have to be:

Wonderful Ass
Big, Tall Wall
Power Fantastic
Possessed (any version)
Crystal Ball
All Day, All Night (the version with Prince on vocals, not Jill)
The Line
Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ
πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.”

Not the songs I would have picked, either, but I still liked this article a lot. It drives me nuts lately when writers say that his material has been unremarkable since either 87 or 91. At least this writer dove into the material and gave props to Gold.

I really like it too, I'm still planning to make a deephouse remix of that song. I once fooled around with it one night and it sounded fantastic. A friend of mine who doesn't really like Prince was blown away with that version and said it has a lot of potential. This song is so dreamy with these beautiful vocals, and a nice percussive groove is already in there! All you have to do is add a simple kickdrum and a bassline and you have killer material IMO...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
