Musicology Now Certifiable For Gold

Musicology sold 191,000 copies in its first week, 173,000 in its second week, and 150,000 this week. That makes 514,000 copies, which means two things, where this album is concerned: First, this album is now certifiable as gold, and second, this is Prince's fastest selling record since Diamonds & Pearls!!!

I know! What a change this is from less than a year ago when nobody could find "N.E.W.S" in stores and not becuase it sold out! It's becuase they never got any in! And that album was probably his first not to chart at all. What a welcome change!

O.K., I don't mean to sound grim, but I guess I won't be impressed until he at least goes platinum. Hopefully he'll go double-platinum. I'll keep praying...

hypothetically.... consider the NPGMC download sales....

He really racked up mulitiple sales on this one..
For this tour, I had 2 friends what wanted to accompany me to the tour, so therefore one of my friends had to get a NPGMC membership... and due to the 2 ticket limit, we found one more person to come with... so what would have been ONE traditional album sale turned into many..

Of course I had to buy the album download when it became available online, had to buy the album in retail and will get another CD when I get to the tour.
Plus the friends going with, really wanted to hear the album before hand and bought store copys... so, let me figure this out.

Myself - NPGMC Download, Retail and Concert version (3)
Friend #1 - Retail & Concert (2)
Freind #2 - Retail & Concert (2)
Friend #3 - Concert (1)

So that's EIGHT sales which normallly would have been TWO POSSIBLY THREE...

Me and all my friends are DJ's at a radio station have have been playing tracks off Musicology everytime we have a show, so I'd like to think that we may have persuaded more people to buy this album. The track Musicology DOES get requested, and TWICE I've had requests for "Life O The Party"..thats when I realized, maybe the listeners ARE paying attention smile

when it certifies as gold, is it posted somewhere? usually there's at least a little asterisk in the billboard charts when something certifies.

A gold record is not really a big deal these days, especially when you've sold 12 million copies of a previous album. But it is still nice to see him up there on the charts.

My point exactly! I will be more impressed if he sells a couple of million. That would signify a "true comeback," if we're strictly speaking on commercial terms. If commercialism means nothing to us, then by that standard, he's done exceptionally well. There will be some skeptics who will contine to criticize P and claim that he cheated the system by including the CD with the concert ticket. However, if it's not the objective to be big on commercial terms, then from my point of view, he's done well because at least people are paying attention to him again...

The ultimate goal is to get the music out there and get people listening...not necessarily to tell millions and millions of records, per say.

as far as i understand...

a gold or platinum certification doesn't reflect albums bought or sold but rather units shipped, so from what i know of the situation Musicology will go straight to platinum, because Columbia shipped a million copies of the album...

Emancipation eventually went double platinum..I see no reason for this not to do the same.

Yeah, but Emancipation's double-platinum certification is somewhat misleading. Multi-disc albums (where each disc contains at least an hour's worth of original music) are certified for EACH DISC shipped. Emancipation still shipped close to 700,000 copies, but since each shipment was counted three times (for each disc) it was certified double-platinum. It didn't actually ship 2 million units. Another example: OutKast's "Speakerboxxx/Love Below" has shipped 4.5 million copies. But it's certified 9x platinum 'cause it's two discs.

Given the "hour's worth of original music" rule isn't it funny that each disc of Emancipation clocked in at EXACTLY one hour? Hmmmmm.....

Anyway, Musicology should have no trouble passing platinum, and probably double platinum thanks to concert sales.

The way record sales have been for Prince and other artist lately, gold is big. And for Prince I think is last gold album was emancipation, so in my opinon, gold is big for prince.

In the Rolling stone article they talked to a Sony/Columbia Records exec and he/she said they had certified 1 million units sold world wide. So I think its already at platium status.

Well that makes up for the fact that some companies buy copies of their own performers CDs to bump up the numbers!

Keep in mind it's only been out for three weeks and doesn't have a proper radio single. "Gold" ain't nothing to sneeze at considering qutie a few acts debut in the top ten and drop out of the Top 100 within less than a month!

This sounds about right.

If an album has globally good sales (Musicology is charting well pretty much everywhere) then you can pretty much double the US figure. He'd have sold a million already and looks like he'll chalk upo somewhere near 2 million even without a hit single. I think he would be well pleased with those figures.

ELBOOGY

When Musicology is certified it will b as Platinum bcuz of the units shipped. So although gold would have been cool 2 me Platinum says Prince is red hot and blue! And u cannot compare P 2 artist who cater towards the video fastfood generation of MTV and BET. He has been out of the loop 2 long. But just wait a couple of years and P's fan base will expand if he stays in the public eye. But all of that depends on what P wants and how long he wants 2 be in the commercial eye.
U,ME,WE!....2FUNKY!
