Bass makes the chord changes more obvious.
There are basically (ha--BASically, what a comedian) only two chords in the song, so the bass probably made the song sound repetitious. Without it the song sounds more free. Bass is especially prominant in R&B which is probably why this seemed revolutionary. I think he's tried to repeat this with Kiss and Slave Check this song out at:

Enjoyed reading this thred. Glad to read someone shared my thoughts about half way down. It is the bass drum that takes care of the low end frequencys in this track and if there was a bassline in there, the bottom end would sound really muddy. ... Any way who are we to question he that is him, or anyone's creative process? | |
