Gold

Everybody wants 2 sell what's already been sold
Everybody wants 2 tell what's already been told
What's the use of money if U ain't gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire there is cold

All that glitters ain't gold
All that glitters ain't gold, mmm

There's an ocean of despair
There are people livin' there
They're unhappy each and every day
But hell is not fashion so what U tryin' 2 say?

There's a lady, 99 years old
If she led a good life, heaven takes her soul

I like it....but it's a little simplistic lyrically.

But then again, who am I to criticize? I never wrote a song in my life.

Its personally one of my favorite songs, but its simple and a bit too bombastic to most ppl. I mean, it sounds JUST like a Purple Rain rip off, same with Last December. NOT to say they are less cool or significant. I LOVE BOTH! BUT its just the formula Prince will never be able to IMPROVE on. Purple Rain was the first and the best smile

See, this is one of those songs that makes me want to cringe. Prince is rolling in money. I mean, shit, in a pic I saw earlier, he had a better manicure than I do!!! Then he writes some hokey song about "money isn't important" blah blah blah. Please!!!

FYI people: It's that time of the month, so if I seem a little sideways, that's why. I get uppity about a lot of things I'd usually let slide thumbs up!

It's okay - not a favorite but I don't hate it either. The lyrics are a little silly for Prince, and the arrangement is a bit overdone and gaudy to me. Still, there are some nice melodies and sounds going on. It just sounded to me like he was trying too hard to make "Purple Rain II" so he'd have a new power ballad to play on tour.

People here are very strange. Prince gots tons of linn drum funky 80's jam, and all are considered classic, even if they are close on structure. And whenever he does rock ballads it's suddenly a rip off of his previous work. It's a classic case of opera-haters who says all opera sounds the same, but the opera lovers says it is very varied. Purlpe rain sounds nothing like Gold or the last december.

I do think that it may be the same type of song as Purple Rain but I like that about it.

Gold is one of Prince's masterpieces. I prefer it to Purple Rain, in fact. And I bet if he started playing that live, the emotional impact would be just as great as Purple Rain. Purple Rain is pretty incredible live, but I don't care to waste my time listening to the studio version of it anymore.... I'll take Gold any way I can get it, though!

I can see why people may have issues with the song; After all, it is pretty simplistic lyrically and is strikingly similar in structure to Purple Rain.

I prefer it to Purple Rain though, as the song just sounds so much more alive energetic. It's a great song, very underrated as far as I'm concerned.

My God, Why Gold sounds like Purple RAin? Because it's a rock ballad and have a epic solo?

November Rain sounds like Purple Rain?
You people got no ears? the arrangements are very different, the melodies are different, the chords are different. neutral

Thats right "Purple rain" and "Gold" are very different!

I love Princes 'epic' sounding songs, he's great at them!

"Free"
"Purple rain"
"The cross"
"Anna stasia"
"Still would stand all time"
"Gold
"Saviour" (very underated or forgotten, which is easy to do on "Emancipation" album)
"Last december"

I love all those tracks, they are not just ur average power ballad or whatever, Prince has always been the very good at beutiful melodies and his lyrics on these songs are fine! Stevie or Bruce or even Bob Dylan are the only ones who can beat him lyrically in 'epic pop' stakes IN GENERAL! MJ is good at 'epic also! (No record label pun intended)

irks me somewhat

This song came on one of the music channels the other day and my mum was present and said, "Not one of your best, Prince". She's a fan and obviously so am I, but I have to agree...it's fine, but not anything in comparison to his best work.

I think it's an amazing song; a high adrenaline stunner of a rock ballad with a blistering guitar solo. It's not really like Purple Rain, it's just structured similarly.

Feels dull to me. Definitely like he's stretching for an anthem, but there was no real fire behind the crafting of the song. Sounds like one guy tinkering away in a studio, whereas, say, Purple Rain really captures the immediacy of a live performance.

I love this song...

I have a suspicion that it's yet another attack on MJ...lol

Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold
Everybody wants to tell whet's already been told
What's the use of money if you ain't gonna break the mold?

sounds like he's talking about MJ's purchase of the beatles
catalogue, which i think, occured right around this time.
What's the use of all that money, if you're not gonna try
to make something new? something fresh?

Maybe I'm just reading too much into this....evillol

Great song! thumbs up!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I like "Gold". Always have. Forget the comparisons and extra analysis of the lyrics. At least appreciate the fact that he had something to say! lol
I love the guitar solo. Despite the fact that it was very clean and crisp, I thought it was very passionate. For me, the solo ranks up there with "PR" and "Pink Cashmere". Good lord, does anyone get tired of "Pink Cashmere"? Not me biggrin .

God is excellent. It is this kind of emotional song that takes you by the guts!!!

Simplistic lyrically? I guess the song means that you can say a lot with simple words...

I envision it like a kind of mirror reflection of Purple Rain... but the song is different....

I don't understand any of the criticisms of Gold. First of all, it doesn't remind me of Purple Rain. There is only one other Prince song that does. It's " The Morning Papers". As far as simple lyrics, they don't get much more simple than the ones in Purple Rain.
