WHAT????? Damn, and of course you love TRC? Now of course it’s possible to like both records it would not surpise me if lots of fans come down on of these two sides. And I appreciate that but if I was being selfish I would tell Prince to forget the watered down elevator funk of TRC and keep up the real funk, keep bringing it raw a la Dirty Mind and, yes, most definitely, the BLACK ALBUM. Well, I think the Black Album is quite cool, but of course it has been made all the more compelling and notorious following the whole situation surrounding it. Were it to have been a normal Prince album released as expected it would have been good but not regarded the way it is now I'm sure. TRC is funkier in my opinion. Parts of the the Black Album sound sadly dated. TRC is more organic and features more real musicians playing real music on real instruments (I kinda hate that whole 'real' thing but I said it anyway!  )
To me TRC is way ahead. I love all the old greats and TRC is Prince fulfilling more of his potential and drawing upon his inspirations the way he should. The Black Album is throwaway party music and always was thus. Good fun though. I was just listening to it today and it is fun, but very much a mish-mash of ideas put together very quickly. | |
