Musicology - MOJO Review

I've just bought the latest edition of MOJO magazine (June '04, Morrissey on the cover) and here's their (pretty) favourable review of 'Musicology'...

PRINCE - 3/5
Musicology

The Purple One is back on a major label with an 'ology'. The album's about "the art and craft of music", see.

How great it would be to herald Prince's best work since 'Parade' or even 'Diamonds & Pearls'. Instead, deja-vu as the Beyonce-endorsed icon files more material that's brilliantly produced and performed, rather than astoundingly well written.

Loosely, the plot finds him rallying 'true funk soldiers' while asking "take ur pick - turntable or a band?". His name is Prince. And he is at pains to point out that he is organically funky.

Along the way, we get exemplary rhythm guitar ('Illusion, Coma, Pimp And Circumstance'), a half-reworking of 'Little Red Corvette' with an extraordinary vocal climax ('A Million Days') and a trim pop-rocker with a deliciously syncopated vocal in the bridge and one of those 'coy show-off' guitar solos Prince does so well ('Cinnamon Girl').

The man's still a magician, but a lyric as insightful as that of 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' wouldn't go amiss.

(Review by James McNair)

All-in-all not as glowing as other reviews I've read but still quite positive. Interesting to see the reviewer has also noticed similarities between 'A Million Days' and 'Little Red Corvette' - something that was mentioned on the Org a few days ago.
