Prince Albums that flow/don't flow Musicology, RC, Parade, PR & Dirty Mind are the only Prince albums where all the songs flow and fit 2 gether perfectly and in a real good sequence.
The rest of the albums 4 me seem kinda jumbled up I mean, how can U go from Do Me Baby in Private Joy or 319 in2 shy in2 Billy Jack Bitch. I mean don't get me wrong their all fucking great songs, each and every last 1 of them. I just think Prince has never been 2 good in positioning his songs on his albums or choosing which songs go 2gether. Extrodinary & Adore are crying 2 be 2gether on an album. I always have to re-arrange albums and sequences so the playlist sounds better with Prince. Composed, Performed, Arranged by Prince-Re-arranged by FunnyWay

Here's what I think:
Albums that flow well: Dirty Mind Purple Rain Musicology The Rainbow Children Parade Diamonds and Pearls Come Batman Albums that flow ok/pretty good: Sign O the Times Lovesexy The Black Album 1999 For You Albums that don't flow that well at all: The Gold Experience Around the World In A Day Controversy Prince ---- Of course there are others to mention....but those spring to mind first. . I ain't bothered by sequencing but some albums should be mentioned:-
1)For me Parades track sequencing on "Life can be so nice" and "Venis de milo" is shit! What the fuck was prince thinking! 2) "Grafitti brdge" (album) is amazing in terms of flow I think, though there are guests on the album so by some this may not count 3) "Diamonds and pearls"- "Jughead" followed by "money dont matter tonight"! Not good 4 me! 4) " The hits (all 3)" are terribally sequenced but greatest hits usually are arn't they? It's very hard to sequence an album and if, like the ye olden days u bought albums on cassette, then the sequencing could be vital to ur overall enjoyment of an album! U could easily overlook certain songs because u have to wind the tape 4 miles to get their! I remember when some albums had a Ballad side and a dance side on cassette! Bad move as then all the songs played next to each other sound the same thus i would grow bord by the album! Cassettes sucked bigtime didn't they!

I hear that, hell yeah...
I mean just go and listed 2 the Rave album from this 13. I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore 14. Silly Game 15. Strange But True 16. Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do It just sounds so jumbled like he was rushing or just pressed 'random record' on2 the master or something

Controversy is released on vinyl !!!!! so you've got two sides: Side A ends with "Do me, Baby" Side B starts with "Private Joy" You should judge the track-listings from the albums until Graffiti Bridge as an A and B-side concept!!!!

I recently listened to a version of the symbol album (1992) on vinyl, and was amazed at how much better "the flow" (not the song) was in contrast to the CD version. It was an eye opening experience-- this had always been an album that seemd pretty jumbled to me, but listening to it side A to side B to side C to side D broke it up very nicely and made it a unique and delightful listening experience. As a result, the album has jumped up on my list of favorite Prince albums. It is very good.

albums that DON'T flow very well...
CONTROVERSY Do Me Baby should definitely be final track on side 2. Also it seems like it's trying to mirror the running order of Dirty Mind, but it just doesn't work very well. AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY I think Prince deliberately sequenced this album in an awkward way to try and make it less accessible. 3rd track in is way too early on the album for all that weirdness that is the intro to Condition Of The Heart. RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC It just seems like a random selection of tracks, no flow at all!

I've never had this on vinyl, which I can only guess would make it better. Still, I LOVE the flow of this CD. In my book, I rank it with Disintegration (by the Cure) as one of the most cohesive albums I've heard. The songs make sense together to me, and move towards a rockin end! Controversy is a lesser album, stuck between the two masterpieces "Dirty Mind" and "1999" ... but the A-side is as brilliant as those two masterpieces. If the tracking would be changed, there wouldn't be a half masterpiece. I like the tracking of "Around the world in a day" Most sides of the prior albums started with an up-tempo song and ended with a ballad .... both sides of "around the world" end with a creepy song! I have nothing to say about "Rave"

I've always argued that Come would have been better received with a slightly altered tracklist. I'd have to think about that.

Personally, I'd have sequenced "Controversy" like this...
side 1: 1. CONTROVERSY (7:14) 2. SEXUALITY (4:20) 3. ANNIE CHRISTIAN (4:21) 4. JACK U OFF (3:12) side 2: 1. LET’S WORK (6:46) 2. PRIVATE JOY (4:24) 4. DO ME BABY (7:47) The longer version of 'Let's Work' is my own edit of the 12" version, ommiting the part with all the samples from other tracks. I'd also drop 'Ronnie Talk To Russia", purely because I've always seen it more as b-side material.

I had always changed Prince albums to include outtakes from album sessions and messed around with the order and what not- until one day, I realized, that I had actually preferred the configurations as Prince originally had them in. I then got rid of all those CD-r's, placed the original CDs back in their cases, and put all the outtakes and extra stuff on their own CDs (I also realized that I just couldn't take a bootleg song being surrounded by an official song because the sound quality is just so different).

Very funny. I actually think those albums are among the better flowing albums, whatever you might think is flowing. In fact, most of the "lesser" albums flow well--Come, Chaos & Disorder, the two mentioned above. Check this song out at:

I'd have to think about that. A) "Let's Work" is the best song on side B ... even better than "Sexuality" or "Do Me, Baby" I just said that the A-side as a whole is much better than the B-side .... "Let's Work" is the only essential song on side B. Therefore, I value side A of "Controversy" as a masterpiece, and I value side B as a lesser side in a brilliant era. B) "Controversy" sure is in the top 10 of greatest albums .... but "Dirty Mind" and "1999" are far more superior to "Controversy" ... and "Controversy" is stuck between them. C) Is "Controversy" better than "Musicology"? .... of course, don't need a second to think about that ... but "Controversy" is better than everything released after "Sign O the Times". I don't agree that Musicology flows well at all... "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Prince's most cohesive albums (or ones that flow as we're putting it) for me would be:
Dirty Mind Purple Rain Parade Batman Come I've listened to these albums and when theyve finished I've got a feel that I've heard an album that works really well as a whole unit ,as opposed to just a selection of great or good songs.
