Think a Comeback is Easy...Look at Lionel Richie's Sales Just took a glance at HITS Daily Double and noticed that Lionel Richie's comeback album is tracking at about 15,000 with over 50 % of the sales numbers in. Looks like the Richman is going to sell about 30K, which will be about 60,000 less than Prince will do in his THIRD week of retail (no, I'm not going to get into all the concert CD giveaway stuff; Prince has sold a very respectable 350,000 without the concert add-ons). Now I know it's not the same thing because Prince has been doing Public Relations stuff all year and has a very successful tour whereas Lionel has mostly been sitting around fossilizing and watching his slutty daughter make an ass out of herself on TV. But there is an incredible sense of vindication in Prince kicking Lionel's ass because...LIONEL RICHIE DID NOT DESERVE THAT GRAMMY FOR BEST ALBUM IN 1984!!! Okay, it was 20 years ago, I should have closure now, but Purple Rain gets beat by freaking Lionel Richie. Born in the USA , I can understand but the smooth Calypso sounds of Lionel "Outrageous" Richie. Lionel should have turned it down on the spot and had Prince come up on stage and get what was rightfully his!
Comebacks are not easy and they are great stories. There are so many artists that try and flop which makes what has happened so far this year all the more pleasant. All good things they say never last...

I'm surprised he hasn't been doing the rounds guesting at shows to promote his album "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Hey I agree comebacks aint easy at all. Princes sales have been very good and I really feel if he comes out with the right video and SINGLE it can only help. Right now you have people interested and I would love to seem him grab the bull by the horns so to speak. One question though. Why not add the concert sales? Those are legit and they put his numbers way past platinum now. I think that what L. Londell Mcmillan and Prince have come up with is remarkable. www.hollywoodreporter.com did an article on how Prince has just basically turned the industry on its ass with his new approach. He has basically told radio I don't need you either and has found a way for older acts that draw huge crowds to their shows to still make an impact on the charts, while also making sure the new music is heard. This is a good thing you know. I mean we all see what the industry is doing with its older acts. They are getting pimp slapped in favor of younger more naive (I can't spell that) talent. You wait I bet you Britney Spears is about three albums away from this herself. So Prince has said hey I am still viable. My music will still be heard and I can still pack 20,000 seaters. That to me is awesome my friend. Anyway I appreciate your post. Peace THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

Oh, I definitely believe they should be counted; officially he will go over the 500,000 mark this week with the incorporated concert sales (that's GOLD people). I just didn't want to stir up the controversy from people who believ the album is only a hit because of the concerts. The approximate 350,000 retail number cannot be argued by haters and all the album needs is one strong single to go platinum just on retail alone. All good things they say never last...
