"Graphitti Bridge," and "Come"

Hi,

This is my first post on the board, it seems like a really cool place.

I figured I'd post a question, as a relatively new Prince fan (just got into his stuff last Summer). What is this board's general thoughts on both "Graphitti Bridge" and Come?"

They seem to be two of his more seldom-discussed albums, but I'm very curious about them, so any opinions are very much appreciated! biggrin

Come is pretty much a half assed album that's decent enough, with a few stand out tracks (Papa, Dark), and GB would've been great if it was just Prince without the guest artists.

never heard of Graphitti Bridge, but it sounds a lot like Graffiti Bridge, wink which is generally thought to be the start of Prince's 90s sound, moving away from his trademark sound which he created in the 80s. I think most people like most of the Prince sung tracks on the album and almost unanimously dislike everything else on that album (except maybe some of the Time's stuff).

As for Come, I think many people love this album...it's an album which often starts off threads dedicated to it which talk about how underrated it is. Personally, I think tracks like "Space", "Loose", "Dark", "Solo" and "Letitgo" are works of genius. I think most people think it's one of his best 90s albums, perhaps second only to The Gold Experience.

welcome eccotides!

Search 4 reviews of both albums on this site!

I love "Grafitti bridge"! It's proberly one of princes most energetic albums as a whole! Very uptempo but also covers alot of ground! If u remember music from 89-90, then you'll like some of this!

The time make this album first class and put party tracks thst should make u wanna dance! And Tevins "Round and round" is pure pop at it's catchiest!

Don't be put off by all the guest artists! The album flows very well I think! Title track is agreed even by me on here that it is pretty naff! Progaramming or production on this album is harsh drum machines very reminisant of the times of 1990/1989! No real drums on this album and some funny noises that create the hook of a song! (again used alot back then!)

Like "1999" album, this album is more comitted to dance (as in pop) then mid-tempo rock/rnb or ballads!

"Come" is almost virtually all mid-tempo rnb which sounds very 92-93! Barely any pop (except mid tempo "Letigo") and crazed track "Loose", which is Princeified techno!

Hoped I could help!

How life treating you eccotides.....

You should get all Prince's CD. He just so phenominally talented, so much music for so many different tastes. I agree with the earlier post about GB, I didnt like the guest artists, either... but songs have their own appeal to each person...

Both albums are not Prince's best.
But I don't think much of everything released after LoveSexy .....

The first 11 albums (that is including The Black Album) are essential in my opninion.

I come to defend the Graffiti Bridge album...

i love it...i think the songs on the album are wonderfully written and
amazingly produced works---in fact, i think it is Prince's best produced
album...the tracks by other artists doesn't bother me so much, it just
proves what an amazing songwriter, arranger, and producer he is..

it is definitely in my top 5 Prince albums.

Come definitely felt like a half-assed release..the title track, Space,
and In the Dark are cool tracks, but the rest feels like filler. I'm
still blown away that Letitgo was a hit, thought that was a lazy sounding
groove.

I've swapped reactions to these 2. Hated GB at first, grew to like much of it. Loved Come at first, now rarely listen to it. The music's not bad, but the songs just didn't hold up very well for me. Lyrics don't have much going on..

I used to like Come better than Gold. Now I realize that Gold is a much more complete album.
Still, Come always seemed the coolest record he had done in a while. Songs I'm not embarrassed to play for friends who don't like Prince.
The end of the song Come is one of Prince's finest moments on record.

Come is excellent... dark, funky, under-the-radar. totally underrated.

Grafitti Bridge has brilliant moments, but as others have mentioned, it would have been much better just as a Prince album. Of course, I have burned my own version of it, removing the tracks w/ the guest vocalists, and adding the Prince b-sides of the time, and it is much better.

I'm unsure how to think about GB. I've made a playlist of just the 10 main Prince tracks and find it to be a very strong album. It's odd though because I often think of it as being less than the sum of it's parts.

I'm sort of the opposite with Come. I tend to feel it's a stronger album as a whole than the individual tracks would dictate.

I like GB better than Come. It's been sitting so brand new on my shelf & I played it today and really enjoyed it, but the movie, uh, I need to watch it again.

Anxiety

COME is one of my favorite Prince albums, hands down. If you'd asked me the same question when it first came out, I would have told you it sucks and to stay very far away from it. It took me five years to appreciate this album, but one day I was bored and I threw it on the stereo and I was like HOLY CRAP, WHAT WAS I THINKING, THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!

I've loved it ever since. It's dark, it's angry, it's experimental, it's cold but at the same time very emotional. To me, the "Come" album is to Prince as the "Low" album is to Bowie - largely overrated, but one day the critics will "discover" it and it'll become a music snob favorite. Mark my words.

"Graffiti Bridge"? Eh, I can take it or leave it. There are some brilliant, brilliant songs on there, and there's a lot of pap, too. When it first came out, I loved it to pieces. I think I grew out of part of it, part of it I always disliked (the theme song...ugh), and part of it I still love ("Joy In Repetition", "The Question of U"...sigh).

Both of these albums can be found cheap in the used bins at your local wrecka stow. My local shop has copies of Come for 2.99...dang shame!

Come grows on you (*** out of ****) and better played from beginning to end!! I love it now!!

Graffiti Bridge is a mixed bag but still good overall (*** out of ****); the movie was awful, though..
