Awww, heyyylll yeah. I've been semi-ranting about the fact that his first decade of output needs to be remastered and reissued for the past 5 years. 1999 needs it BADLY. Prince is hardheaded, it won't happen without his consent. If people think Musicology is getting a lot of folks to rediscover his back catalog, they haven't seen anything compared to what could happen if/when all those albums are updated sonically.

I would let every kicker in the NFL give me one square in the nutz if it would allow for me to have a remastered Prince catalog!

Here's a scary thought, however: Would Prince insist that the swearing and heavily sexual material be taken out? "Dirty Mind" would be about six minutes long....

I would definitely buy remastered versions of Prince through to Lovesexy. The only way I'd buy the others is if they had extras. I think the sound on graffiti bridge and on are fine the way they are.

there's a massive market as we know for the old albums remastered, but he knows full well that that market doesn't have a detrimental effect on potential buyers of the new albums. - no one is holding off buying Musicology untill they get a re-mastered copy of SOTT...

You're correct that Prince probably isn't that interested in remastering the old tunes since his new stuff is still selling.

However I doubt that there really is a "massive market for old albums remastered". There's certainly a market for the hardcore fans like you see here on prince.org, but I really doubt that the casual fans (people who own VBOP) are just dying to get a copy of Graffiti Bridge, Lovesexy or Parade remastered like folks here are. Maybe the "big"albums would sell alright, 1999, PR, and SOTT. After those you're pretty much selling to the hardcore fans.

i take your point but as VBOP sold well over a million with no promotion from prince. no fanfair. no articles, etc. a set of re-masters up to Batman, with marketing money, and press coverage could do big numbers, albeit slowly. remember - it cost very little to re-master. it would be able to turn a profit with very little sales.

"very little sales" is the key phrase.

I agree with you that remasters could turn a profit. If it's targeted as a project for the hardcore fans that make up that audience it could definitely make money.

I just disagree with the idea that there is some huge market out there waiting for the wonderful day that the Batman soundtrack gets remastered.

FYI, I saw more than a few commecials for VBOP on MTV and other stations, so it got some marketing. Selling a cheap "greatest hits" package to casual fans is alot easier than trying to convince them that they really need to hear albums like ATWIAD remastered.

How about this for an idea WARNER BROTHERS:
Release each remastered album with original artwork etc but with the bsides and extended versions released from each album era... e.g:
Around the World In a Day would contain:
Around the World In A Day
Paisley Park
Condition of the Heart
Raspberry Beret
Tambourine
America
Pop Life
The Ladder
Temptation
Pop Life (Dance Mix)
Hello (Dance Mix)
Raspberry Beret (Dance Mix)
She's always in my Hair (Ext. Ver.)
America (Ext. Ver.)
Girl (Ext. Ver.)
Pop Life (Ext. Ver.)

How's that for an idea?
Perhaps on albums that don't have enough room on one disc fit them on 2....
As we can see plenty of people are coming back to Prince.... more ppl than r returning to BT at any rate....

That's why it needs to be done with his first 10 albums. The rest will take care of itself at a later date. wink

It works for other artists, some who haven't sold as many records in their heyday as Prince. And let's not forget, ATWIAD went at least triple platinum. Sure, it could be legitimately argued that it did good business because it came directly on the heels of an album that sold over 10 million copies and the anticipation of "what's next?" but the fact is it still was a triple platinum release. I see it as more akin to Fleetwood Mac's Tusk; a highly experimental, possibly alienating album with a couple of pop hits that was the follow up to an albatross. In this case, Mac's Rumours to Prince's Purple Rain. In general remastered catalogs tend to do good business, which is why the industry keeps doing it.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I think when you use the term "remastered" you need to be careful.

It is possible for WB to slightly improve the sound/loudness of new releases such as VBOP and Japanese cds etc, but only with the help/assistance of Prince can they truly be remastered - on a mixing desk with profesional re-mixing people who know what they are doing.

Prince holds the multi-tracked original tapes in his vault - WB only have a "flat" tape of all the albums (but they hold the "master" rights to re-release these albums). So there is the conundrum - they both need to come to some agreement to get these beauties re-mastered and on the shelves!

I truly believe this may only happen after Prince departs this world for greater things, and his inheriter/estate will hopefully see fit (like the Hendrix estate) to do something about it!

I think we'll see them sooner than that. Especially since PR is getting special treatment for it's 20th year anniversary. I also think we're about to see some other things come about as well, like vault releases. I say this because he's making nice with the WB...and most of the folks in there now aren't the ones that he was fighting with...and they can stand to use the money. He is also making tons of cash right now. I'm guess/hoping he's going to use this money to free his children...like the Dream Factory Stuff.

So .... Prince has to be involved in the remastering proces?
This gives my a little unpleasant feeling

If the album-concepts are fu*ked .... I don't know ...
I hope they will release it as 2cd-sets:
disc 1 : the original album (just remastered) UNTOUCHED
disc 2 : outtakes and demos, hopefully not the ones we already have.

BUT ... I'm pretty sure ... if Prince will do the remastering himself ... he will fuck it up!!
It will not be the same anymore. Probably some bells or something will be overexposed .... maybe ....
he will really change the mixing, and believe me, it won't get any better.

I truly hope he won't do it himself, I have no confidence in his attempt to preserve the original mixing.

And those albums are a part of my life ... I'm not sure I'll be happy with a new sound .... I'm afraid Prince will make it sound clean ... erase all the rough edges.

I have no problem with the fact that 80's albums sound .... uh ... eighties!

So ... Prince ... at least, leave the remastering to the guys who are good at this!
Don't try to better the original mix ..... and leave the artwork intact:
I would like to see them released in a original copy of the vinyl sleeves!!!
(like the japanese releases of Led Zeppelin)
