Old Friends 4 Sale--which version do u prefer? Original version--I think someone posted it was from the ATWIAD/Parade era. Sounds like it's directed at someone in particular. drug references..introspective on his career
Newer Version-from The Vault WB CD-...seems more like a bitter love song now.. either way, great song/s you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

The original '85 version
The later "The Vault" version is just watered down.

If the original version was on some black album boots, then I think I prefer the new one, though I think the original one is not without its charm. For the record, I am one of a select few who really really likes OF4S, the 1999 album. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. Oh, I love it too. It may be a contractual throwaway, but The Vault makes for a nice compilation album. It's got a really cool jazz funk vibe. Could've used 3 or 4 more songs though. As for the comparison between the two versions of Old Friends- I like them both. For the original version, I like the vocal on there better, it seems more emotional. And the lyrics are more direct. On the other hand, I love the horn arrangement of the later version with it's kind of 20's jazz sound. It sounds like something from a classic movie. I'd give the edge to the original version though.

Usually people like whatever version of a song they heard first.

not always true..i heard the Vault version first when i bought the cd... i didn't even know there was an original version until i did a Prince search on WINMX. I slightly prefer the original version for it's matter-of-fact kind of story. the newer version kind of jumps over different stories, it seems you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

I like the lyrics from the original, and I like the lush instrumentation and GORGEOUS vocals from the '99 release. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

There are two unreleased versions.
Which are we talking about? One is more stripped-down than the other...

Which are we talking about? One is more stripped-down than the other... I hope we're talkin' about the "stripped version" ... which is the first one recorded (that's a great song!), cause the other unreleased version is as fu*ked up as the "The Vault" version. (because they're both terrible, I alays assumed they're the same version .... never gave them a scond chance)

The original song.... the ears just perk up more when I listen to this version "..My work is personal, I'm a working person, I put in work, I work with purpose.."
