Nice find. I was listening to that very song the other night, and it didn't even occur to me.
On the other hand, this guy's had more good musical "ideas" then everyone on this forum put together, so I'm willing to cut him some slack.

I KNEW I had heard that synth/horn line before...I just could not put my finger on it!!! Also listen to "Housequake" on SOT, minute 4:25 to 4:28. Thats the part on "Musicology" where he says "for the true funk soldiers".

you're all talking about lines, but they're just tones from a synth. if this is the setting of the synth he likes best, you can find hundreds of songs in wich you find musicology.the same thing with his guitar, there are so many songs that sound kinda simular, but if you've got the sheet music it was meant to be different.

get my point.

just dont say every song in wich prince screams sounds like the other one. wink

I'm not a musician, so I don't know the exact definition of a "tone". However, to these ears, the synth line near the end of "my computer" is the exact one from "Musicology".
There's just no doubt. You can just hear it.
It is only a synth line, but he's now used it twice. That's all.

It won't be long before people try to latch onto that to complian about (since everything else complian-worthy seems to be evaporating).

WHO CARES if he sampled a few seconds? It wouldn't be the first time he's done that. Some of ya'll act like this is the first disc in which he has refined any ideas.

Off the top of my head:

Condition of the Heart - Refined Into - Sometimes it Snows in April
3 Chains O' Gold - Refined Into - Strays of the World
Free - Refined Into - Purple Rain
I Wanna Be Your Lover - Sampled Into - My Name is Prince
Gett Off - Refined Into - Now
Let's Go Crazy - Refined Into - Endorphine Machine
Insatiable / Scandalous / 10 Other Songs
1999 - Refined Into - Party Man
Baby I'm a Star - Refined Into - Trust
Erotic City - Refined Into - 1+1+1 is 3

I could go on and on, but you get my point. I'm not saying the second versions are better, I'm just saying that any good artist will revisit good ideas. You'd be stupid not to. Does Stephen King write in a different genre each time he writes a book?

I noticed this when he played leno, I thought he was just jamming and never expected to hear it on the single. I hardly think it counts as plagerism though!!

I didnt mean to say it in that way. There is nothing wrong with me, matter of fact I love recycling. I love when Sting sings lines of his previous songs or uses the same melodies but tweaked. Prince does it a lot too, that's aaight. I was just listening to Emancipation and noticed, and thought y'all would like to know.

Exactly! It's not that it's a big deal. It's just that it's true. And interesting.
Anyway, the examples listed above aren't exactly the same thing...here, we are talking about a specific line, not sound-a-like rythym or production.
To me, Prince has never ripped himself off more than with "319" from TGE. This is blatantly "Kiss", with fuzzed up guitar sounds instead of the leaner original. He even takes the dance break in the same spot, says "You're makin' me wanna dance" instead of "think I wanna dance now" or whatever, and the little funky guitar solo kicks in.....go ahead and listen. It's the same song.

Yeah, it's the same synth line, but who cares? Honestly, I think a few of you spend too much time trying to see what new songs sound like Prince's past works. I never even notice most of the time. A great song is a great song.

I noticed this a while ago. I posed the ? but no one answered.

http://www.prince.org/msg...sg_1533730

There are also elements of Alphabet st. I think. It's quite clever as the sample is sped up. I only found out by accident as I don't listen to Emancipation that much...hardly at all even. I just happened to be listening to it in the background.

There's elements of older material buried all over. Another example is Reflection is very similar to a boot called "I miss U". I think there may be more. Someone said that Call my name is West.

I happen to love it when he does this Like Sexuality=Let's go crazy ext.=Rainbow Children...or Mountains ext has parts to it that are something else. I'm sure further listening, we'll find even more things on Musicology.

There are the same types of similarities in ATWIAD and Kiss (I think I wanna dance bridge).

I was going to post this as a separate topic but since it has come up here - Isn't the Musicology song just made from the samples that were originally in the Musicology room?

You are absoloutely right. Turns out, us club members had been listening to samples of that song for months before we even knew it would be a song.

Okay I heard it, a little after "these are my records."
It's not exactly the same, though.
Any musician plays licks from their bag of tricks.
It's how you put them together that's important.
Nobody could deny that the two songs are nothing like each other.
