I'm sure everyone knows of the trend that's been going on with producers remixing Jay-Z's Black Album. What started this trend was DJ Dangermouse doing The Grey Album (Jay-Z's Black Album remixed with The Beatles' White Album). In March, a producer out in L.A. by the name of K12 decided to do his own Jay-Z remix album by using the sounds from one of his favorite albums, Purple Rain. By chance, a radio DJ got hold of it and played "My 1st Song" on the air that same night. The response was so huge that K12 put out a limited edition CD about 3 weeks ago. Since then, The Purple Album has been receiving airplay in Los Angeles, San Fransico, Atlanta, Chicago, and Detroit. Now here is my question to the forum: Could this prove that Prince has a Pop Icon status parallel or even greater than The Beatles? Why would radio as well as the general public identify with music from Purple Rain more so than that of The White Album? Is it because Prince brigded the gap to a younger generation by performing with Beyonce at The Grammy's? I mean, seriously, when was the last time Prince had a video on MTV?! Let me know what you think about all of this. I actually bought The Purple Album and I must say, it is phenominal! Sorry guys, but I need to reiterate the real topic of discussion here. I wanted to know if you think Prince has more pull with the younger generation than the Beatles. I was trying to use the Purple Album as an example that it seems that the MTV generation still has a great interest in Prince more so than the Beatles. Btw...just to entertain the topic of The Purple Album, I think it was very clever in giving Purple Rain a Hip Hop makeover. Truly the main people who will benefit from The Purple Album is Jay-Z and Prince. I know people (younger that is) that didn't know how great Purple Rain was and wanted to hear the original. I also know older people who tolerate hip hop but love The Purple Album which sparked an interest in Jay-Z. Seems like a win/win situation to me.
