Very hard choice but I'll go with When Doves Cry. I'm not a purple rain type of fan but if I were given the choice to only have one song it would be this one. The music is top form, the hook is good, production is innovative, and the lyrics are interesting.

so many of his songs have had such an effect on me personally...but i'd have to go with When Doves Cry...4 the same reasons others have mentioned...the pure simplicity of it:
creating a funky song w/ no bass line, the incredible lyrics (how many girls that made out w/me in my teenage years just by saying 'Dig if U will the picture / Of U and I engaged in a kiss') just an all around cool song

If I had to pick one, CRUCIAL - long version with guitar.

It's between "Adore" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend".

This indeed is very difficult, but I would say Gold in all its epic splendor, I get goosebumps at the neginning of the guitar solo eah time I ear it. On another day it may be Anna Stesia, wonderful simple yet complex (I love the sreaming guitar in the background during the chant). Glad to see that other people picked these songs as well.

An unfair answer to an unfair question:

In the top of the pops chart in my head, my vote for Prince's best song ever changes on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis.

Right now? Space.

It is a pretty impossible question, and my opinion changes every day, but I think I would probably go for If I Was Ur Girlfriend (his best ever relationship song). Its already been picked by a few, like some other SOTT songs (Adore, Forever In My Life and SOTT would be up high on my top of the pops chart too).
And I’ve always had a soft spot for Still Would Stand All Time, even though I don’t think GB is one of his best albums.

Mine is SOTT. simple music. powerful lyrics and sounded like nothing else at the time. Have to say that RACE and Pappa are very underrated.
