KAMASUTRA....THE ONLY PRINCE ALBUM THAT HAS TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED ME. yes, newpower soul wasn't great but it did have some very good moments....the one, come on and wasted kisses. all albums released by prince have always had a few very good numbers and have always been interesting but the kamasutra cd has always been a real disappointment. nothing of any real quality on it. his genius hit a brick wall on this recording

http://www.prince.org/msg/7/91607 So 'Newpower Soul' is a Prince album after all? Make your mind up. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Is Kamasutra even credited to Prince? I thought it was credited to the NPG Orchestra or something.

That's right. Call this a Prince album, call Madhouse 8 & 16 Prince albums (which I gladly do).

of course "new power soul" is a prince album, he's all over it!!! but he did not want it thought of as an official release, it's a lighthearted party album but it is not an official prince album in the same way that "exodus" or "what time is it?" are not official prince album even though he is all over those recordings. IT IS NOT AN OFFICIAL PRINCE ALBUM JESUS H.....

im talking in the broad sense...he's the main man on kamasutra, even comparing it to jill jones, the family or madhouse, there was good music on those recordings, there ain't none on kamasutra.

The first time you here the "theme" it's like...mmm...not-so-good. The next 2598446596985 times it's, to quote Brando Tha horror ... tha horror! "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

The performance is by the NPG ORchestra. The composer and 'primary orchestral arranger' is credited as . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Plus: the NPG Orchestra is obviously a synthesizer. I guess it's safe to assume it's Prince playing the keys ...

Yes folks, he padded out the mail order version of Crystal Ball with... Kamasutra...
Meanwhile, Dream Factory, the 1983 aborted album, the 1989 Rave album, and Roadhouse Garden remain in the vault.

I actually vaguely like two songs off Kamasutra.
The funky sax one and the one that sounds like Ennio Morricone film music....that's quite nice actually. The rest is pure unadulterated rat-infested diarhoea inducing stomach convulsing SHIT. . [This message was edited Tue May 4 19:37:54 2004 by mrdespues]

I totally agree...I've tried to listen to it twice, and came up short of finishing it both times.
Wasn't this supposed to be his wedding gift to his wife? If so, no wonder they divorced... Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

sorry, it has grown on me...
I think you're too narrow-minded. I mean, the man can't be doing Controversy and Purple Rain clones all the time!! Or maybe you just have ears to funk music? Who knows Peace "America is a continent..."

I feel indifferent towards that album.
I don't love it & I don't hate it. It's just there. I'll say one thing for it though: I've never heard anyone play a pair of scissors on a song before.

There, i said it. LMFAO!!!!! Yup, you said it. I can also tell you from a professional modern/ballet dancer's perspective...it's all those things. Though I'll agree with MRDESPUES on the two tracks that have a seedling of potential..."Barcelona" and "Cutz"

The real songs on KAMASUTRA with Eric Leeds on sax (the trax with a beat!) are GREAT! the rest is indeed a filler.
Here and there you can hear Prince using samples of Clare Fisher. But if he had it done by a real orchestra - conducted by someone else.. Lisa for instance, it would have been far more better. BRING LISA BACK... i miss her 'warm' orchestration where it is needed! Wendy IS already back Is there any official lay-out for the Kamasutra CD? cause i bought it the 5-CD compilation, and was just wondering.. Was it actually ever officially released as an album on it's own?

Yep - there's keyboards on the album ... but aside from input by Prince, Eric Leeds, and the NPG Horns (Hornheadz), there's another 70 or so musicians credited in the liner notes fo contributing additional horns, strings, harps and percussion, as is Clare Fischer as orchestral conductor and Morris Repass as the orchestra's manager. . It was originally issued as a cassette tape through the 1-800 NEWFUNK mail order operation. The liner notes accompany this, complete with a load of twaddle about 'Coincidence or Fate?' regarding Prince changing his name to , and he and Mayte being predestined soul-mates. The CD release came as part of the 'Crystal Ball' 5CD deal in the hockey puck-shaped transparent case - which had no liner notes inside. (The 4CD set had a booklet but no copy of Kamasutra). My edition of Crystal Ball didn't come with it, and I never missed it. I listened to an ex-girlfriend's copy once and it nearly put me in a coma.
Okay, okay, we know it's not an official Prince album. (God, with the semantics!) But is it an unofficial one? I could swear I read something around the time it came out that it was something Prince comissioned it to commemorate his wedding with Mayte. I guess I thought it was mainly a Clare Fisher composition. Someone please clear this up for me- did Prince write this album? You better wake up, Stella. This is my town!

Composer and Primary Orchestrator: Arranger and Orchestral Conductor: Clare Fischer Musical Transcriptions: Brent Fischer . I take that broadly to mean that Prince wrote, as in recorded, the music, and his arrangement was credited as primary orchestration. The music was handed over to Clare Fischer who provided further orchestral arrangement. The score was then transcribed by Brent Fischer for performance by the orchestra. The 'Coincidence or fate?' liner notes to the cassette release appeared on 'The Dawn' website and in the Prince and Mayte's wedding program. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.
